Basically he's old and depressed because of his age and because of so many friends dying (having to regularly attend funerals of old lifetime friends is probably one of the bleakest aspects of aging when you think about it )
Writing came hard, and though I did produce some new pages on both THE WINDS OF WINTER (yes) and BLOOD & FIRE (the sequel to FIRE & BLOOD, the second part of my Targaryen history), I would have liked to turn out a lot more. My various television projects ate up most of those months.
!bookworms it's completely and utterly over for ASOIAFcels . The spin-off shows are consooming his time, he's sadge because he's old and because Trump is running or something and his promise of "I'm not writing any spin off until TWOW is done" is broken as he's writing F&B sequel B&F which will certainly be published before "The Winds of Winter" (if that book ever comes out, sounds as if he wrote 10 pages this year lol).

He clearly lost interest in the GoT series and is making excuses. He should have taken a sabbatical years ago because if you're sick of your project you'll never finish it

He probably saw how badly his vision played out on screen and realised that no number of pages is going to make that a good ending.
Imagine his plans for Winds of Winter slowly steering various plot elements to a conclusion and then finding out that everyone hates it because it is stupid.
Yeah I'd never find the motivation to finish that either.

The dumb part is that the decisions made were not that bad, the show just rushed them and fell off production quality wise at the end.
