Basically, the committee was supposed to organize guests and panels about sci-fi and fantasy writing. They picked two speakers instead of the expected four, and used the extra money for other shit without telling anybody or receiving approval. Both their speaker picks were no-names, one of whom had no sci-fi credentials whatsoever, instead being a garden variety identity grifter who writes essays with titles like "When Black Girls Hear That 'Our Bodies Are All Wrong." :marseychonkerfoidindignant:  The committee was such a failure that the convention was willing to risk the racism accusation just to get rid of them.

Tl;dr: White couple, but specifically the foid, Emily Bell, are put in charge of getting four writers to be a draw for a symposium at a nerd convention. They get two, neither of them draws, one of them an Angry Black Woman, and spend the extra money on their own stuff.
They don't tell the orgs who they're getting or what they're doing until called out right before the convention, and Emily Bell portrays all responses and pushback as being racists trying to stop her from being a White Saviour who deserves free money. Standard prog response, you either support her 100% no doubts allowed or you're a bigot. Some top notch crybullying is involved.
Current news: by being DEI grifters the couple might have canceled all future symposiums because they have made it too toxic to run; every year the choices and committee will get people nitpicking the level of inclusion, probably the Bells themselves fuelling gossip to look better. i now managed to read a soy's version of the events. everyone with half a brain knows "gen con is right - the end".  it hurts me how soyboy comes to the same conclusion, but has to constantly inject his "i have to stay nice to the tribe or I'll be attacked" views into the summary.
and for whatever reason the "company" of the guys gencon has issues with even manged to bring in some hard numbers. why? no idea, to show they are true and really sacrifice shit?
According to Chris, Atthis Arts lost thousands of dollars at GenCon 2024:
Spend $500 in handheld terminals, cause ... "don't want volunteers to use their personal phones" (what for, no clue tbh). Make a measly $1k in sales, but since the money obviously goes to the authors, make $181 after transaction & author fees. So $300 in the red.
Then they sold some kind of anthology, but I honestly don't know their issues with it and I don't understand the model behind it. They claim they made ~$400 on USB drive sales. But they are ~2k in the red, "due in part to paying "pro-qualifying rates" to authors." (soy boy blog writer obviously defends this).
The numbers are obviously laughable. It just shows you what kind of amateurs are at work, but they are obviously big shots and get to tell GenCon how to do business. Yeah, you have to skip to the very end where you get the actual assessment. Paragraphs upon paragraphs of trying to convince everyone he's one of the good ones before he finally calls out Emily for acting like any problems with her are a problem with diversity and inclusion, which he rightly points out is both bullshit and makes all her other claims questionable.
He knows the lines have been drawn, she's clearly attacked him for not just telling her she's such a brave victim already. But he still has to fellate the idea that an aggressive black activist with no ties to nerddom was a good pick, and that the Gencon people were mean in how they went after the poor, victimised White Saviours, rather than acting entirely reasonably to a couple determined to be c*nts about the whole thing.

Spez had some conversations with Elon Musk — the owner and CEO of one of Reddit's direct competitors —
And he came away from those conversations with ideas on how to "run Reddit" which, when put into motion,
have led to Reddit Admin Policies that kneecapped moderators three times in a row (PushShift, then mod bots, then the third party apps mods use in place of the official app),
Which resulted in the site exploding in protests and riots, decade-old user accounts deleting in protest, entire communities migrating to anyplace else (that's not Twitter), the people who volunteered their time and energy and expertise to keep community on this site walking away, the burning of literally decades of stakeholder expertise and skills, and damage to the goodwill and profitability of Reddit,
And the bigoted, violent harassers whom we finally got to decamp off to Twitter and back to 4chan in 2022 returning in force to Reddit to resume slandering and harassing moderators and communities, and celebrating the idea of bringing online their hate brigades to vote out any moderators foolish enough to stick around after Spez sneered at them —?
Your takeaway from conversations with the transphobic white supremacist who runs your business competition was to implement his ideas of running off all the good faith users and making your site inhospitable to advertisers —?
