Nearly done with Book of the New Sun.
It's a masterpiece, it's insane, 10/10 would recommend

Is it really that good? Got a dusty paperback in my room but been apprehensive of years of it failing my expectations. I would be sorely disappointed if it wasn't Hyperion/Dune level since I've been craving a sci-fi book on that level for decades.

It's on all those "best books of all time" lists for a good reason. I think it's easy to bounce off of it because it's hard to understand what's going on until about halfway through the first book, but if you stick with it all the pieces start falling into place.
Also it's four books (or two omnibuses) so your dusty paperback might be book 3 or something, so be careful about that.
