Women of the 1890s started smoking cigars and showing their feet to foot fetishists in dark alleys (to see the future)
Golden feet were sold in catalogs.
All because of a book where an old Jewish guy uses his occult power to hypnotize Trilby (who has the most beautiful feet in the world!) into becoming a famous opera singer
When all those "unreasonable" preachers in the year 1900 were writing articles on "the novel" and the "the play" being a moral danger in society, they weren't r-slurred.
They weren't just mad that women would dare read books
or
"STOP HAVING FUN!"
They were thinking about 17 year old Trilbyanas mass mailing their foot pics to some french guy, and mailing dirty hypotism fanfic to eachother.
Also, the Trilby fans caused high society artist models to quit their job, when all these Trilbyanas wanted to be models and kept gossiping about which models were like Trilby
The established models were like
"This career is OVER. I quit"
And the Trilbyanas were like
"my first day of modeling.... no one hypnotize me into being their famous opera singer wife haha"

Okay it didn't actually ruin a whole generation, I'm just annoyed with it because I sat through a smooth-brained presentation involving it at a professional conference recently.
Imagine arguing that people place too much importance on intelligence, while making up a dozen fake ones like music intelligence and sports intelligence. It's like if Little Caesar's insisted that pizza is overrated.
bruh i had to watch the movie of this when i was younger it was terrible. directly contributes to the dumb white women going to india for a "spiritual journey" and getting r*ped and murdered on day one
Ayn Rand ( ) is not a very good writer, to be fair she learned English as a second language and the writing still kicks the butt of most contemporary female romance books.
I think the story was compelling but definitely fell into the category of "hold my hand while I walk you through my world where my ideas are good and everyone else's are bad."
That being said, I found it enjoyable and insightful, and I think it has a lot of lessons for people in the modern age, ESPECIALLY the story of Gale Wynand in the book.
I would read if only to understand how full of shit people are when talking about the book, it's kind of a chud awakening solely because how much misinformation there is about Ayn Rand as a person and her Ideas posted by liberal and liberal adjacent people.
100% read and watch some of the interviews with her (might even want to watch those first to see if her ideas actually interest you.)

Every yt woman read this, because they all want to be covered head to toe and herded like sheep, like in the Muslim world.
Somehow a bunch of rich people just ruining their own lives out of pettiness became something to aspire to despite every person in the book being a worthless butthole

:
A long read on "Trilbymania":
Trilbyana - The Rise and Progress of a Popular Novel, by Joseph Benson Gilder & Jeannette Leonard Gilder
edit: disregard that long read it kind of sucks... it was only written in 1895 and Trilbymania went on for 20 more years
