I read it when I was 9
I did not need high IQ to enjoy it, I was a pretty stupid 9 year old.
It took me a few extra years to be able to read a lot of other stuff, because they were boring, or used more difficult language to say little, causing my tiny brain's reading comprehension to drop to 0
LOTR is about needing to destroy an evil object and not be tortured by monsters
, and Tolkien writes in a straightforward manner. It's not hard to read, just long.
