I think department stores are just hard for some reason. Only Wally World has it figured out. Gotta really lean mostly on groceries to get regular customers, the other stuff just purchased for convenience/impulse. Few go to Target for groceries. And if you don't focus on groceries it becomes harder to stock fresh groceries which makes even fewer go there for groceries. Groceries are king! @pizzashill discuss
You probably also have to fight the r-slurred bean counters who notice that groceries are low margin and have all these great ideas to make line go up for a quarter.

the only thing that matters in a grocery store is produce. companies consider it their primary influencer, and almost all internal dialogue is based around improving produce standards and quality. walmart has shit produce, they will almost certainly be hit much harder in this recession than kroger, for example.

so yes, if you fail to improve produce standards your business will decline over time.

What really differentiates grocery stores for me is the value of their cheese and having non UHT organic milk. Don't get me wrong! I'm not drinking raw milk over here! But I don't like how UHT milk tastes! I want the normal pasteurized organic milk! That's the best milk and few have it! Why is organic milk always UHT!!!

I get that UHT stuff because I live alone and don't consume much milk at all, but you're right, it has a weird aftertaste. It's not terrible, but regular milk definitely tastes better.
