There are dozens, probably hundreds of Bengali dialects tbh and it was only in the British period that the dialect of Nabadwip and adjacent areas came to be recognized as 'pure' Bengali, even now in a lot of districts the people speak one sort of Bengali but write in the official version. Like in my father's village, I can't understand 50% of what they say cause its mixed with Oriya and has some peculiarities of its own. But that's Bengali. Comparatively I'd say I understand my Assamese roommate a lot more clearly when he speaks to his family on the phone but that's a separate language .

Sentimentalism is fine and everything but these sorts of advocates cause a lot of harm to their communities. Like we have a tribal population, the Santhalis, who didn't have a script of their own. Perfect situation for us to assimilate them when we began setting up schools there. Instead some strag went there and made a script for them, now that's the language of instruction in their schools and higher education and professional opportunities obv became a lot tougher.
