I bet there's going to be a lot of stuff that they try to pass and justify with green politics. It's not like the rich are regularly flying on Ryanair so it's essentially just an extra arbitrary flat tax on the poor. What a liberal policy.

Frick I hate eurocucks. that would never happen in America
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
The only thing stopping that from happening is the immense r-sluration of american rails.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
The US already has the most expansive rail network in the world. But US rail is also pretty much used exclusively for freight and tracks are privately owned so the government cannot snap its fingers and make them switch to passenger service more or less.

Burgerstan is also big, so its not much of an accomplishment. Its still garbage for its purpose, huffing copium doesnt change that.
Burgers also hate public transport for some reason. Even where its not infested with BIPOCs and bums.

It may be difficult for a euro to understand but our cities weren't bombed to dust several times so we still have some pretty old layouts that aren't terribly conducive to effective public transit.

America is even worse because it bans foreign airlines from running domestic routes, which allows domestic airlines to jack up the price

Every country has this because they don't want Saudi Arabia Airlines coming in paying zero dollars per gallon on fuel plus state subsidized fare discounts putting domestic airlines out of business. Then your whole domestic air travel infrastructure is controlled by another state or you end up having to funnel your tax dollars to prop up your own national airline more than they already are.
There are some minor exceptions to this like the 8th rule of free air travel.

Its like 1800km of mostly flat country from Amsterdam to Madrid it takes Eurotrains two days to cover that?
I thought you guys had bullet trains, shouldn't that be like a 4-5 hour journey at most on one? Even with our over capacity tracks and slower trains 1500km takes me like 18 hour. For like 24 euros.

You can go to Barcelona from Amsterdam in 11 hours, but you have to change trains in Brussels and Lyon. And this part of Europe isn't flat either, you have to bypass the Massif Central and the Pyrenees.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
And because Euro trains are notoriously late, you'd have to build at least an hour or two at every change or risk being stuck in bumfrick nowhere cause you missed the last train.

And don't forget to factor in the risk of running into a railway strike.

Hmm true but apparently they cut a tunnel through Pyrenees so time probably isn't impacted much by that. Some of our trains on the western coast go through hilly terrain to the point speed gets halved, like Delhi-Mumbai takes about 18-20 hours, 1500km then Mumbai-Goa takes 12 hours for 600km.

I was just talking to a euro who was gloating over air travel there and sure enough I checked and it is amazingly cheap. Guess macron heard.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
They tried it in other places as far as I heard but people just didn't like not having TV screens and meals and so on and considered those worth the extra cost. Which is kind of odd to think about tbh. Cheap airline food is not worth paying €100 extra for.

Yeah i prefer a dining cart on my domestic flights. Get hungry in the airport waiting and I already buy a snack. By the time we are in air im absolutely starvola and usually need another snack if meals arent delivered promptly. Its worth the convenience even if its a lot more money.

No dude, you honestly can. I say this as someone who has always brought snacks ever since ending up in a ten hour flight delay.
As long as you're not bringing liquids like soup or whatever, you're fine to bring food through TSA security. Never had an issue with bringing anything I bought in the post-security food court on board either. So, picnic it up.

Yeah they probably considered the honey a liquid. Just make a regular ham and cheese, or buy a sandwich after security to take on board and you'll be good.

You're probably too young to remember this, but shit like the ValuJet crash turned much of a generation against super budget airlines too. Something about dying in the Florida swamplands because repairs were done with duct tape made a lot of people more willing to shell out extra for major airlines for life.

The real problem is that Europe allows foreign airlines to compete with domestic ones, but American doesn't. So US airlines jack up the price. Weirdly the only industry where Europe is more deregulated than America

Much of the time it's not actually that cheap, behind the sticker price are dozens of "fees" for everything imaginable. Actually getting onto the plane for the advertised price is an art form.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
Not really tho? Extra price is usally for seat choice, and extra luggage. You can definitly get the advertised price if you dont care where you sit and travel lightly.
Jump in the discussion.

It's been getting worse. There are now fees to check-in (outside a specific 1 hour window on their app), print passes, bring any hand luggage at all, etc.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
I haven't seen fees for personal items ever.
I also haven't seen arbitrarily narrow check in times and fees. Usually the fees are just for checking in at the airport, to incentive people to not need kiosks.

My general impressions of budget airlines is that they are fine if you are going to only be in a place for a day or two and can fit everything into a backpack and carry it on as a personal item, which is usually free.
My local airport has Allegiant with direct flights to Florida and Vegas and I have used them a couple times for weekend trips.
With kids and being at a place for a few days at that point I would probably just go with a mainstream carrier, though.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
Yeah, over in Europe the budget airlines have slowly been shrinking the free baggage allowance down to nothing. Every year the maximum size before paying gets smaller.
Couple that with the endless hoops to jump through to avoid other fees and the whole thing becomes a false economy.
