I don't think anyone expected the sheer scale of Russian incompetence. A good number of analysts said they were a paper tiger for years, but then actually being a flaming paper tiger with severe FAS had to be a shock.

On top of that, Putin handled the initial invasion in the stupidest, most audacious manner possible. Putin lied to his own Central Bank so they couldn't repatriate their foreign exchange reserves from foreign banks. That's how the US and EU were able to freeze something like 60% of their forex. He kept his own generals in the dark so they couldn't adequately strategize and prepare. They sent in military police during the initial bum rush on Kyev because they thought Ukraine would be another 1956 Hungary situation. He was completely drunk on his own Koolaid.

I didn't know about the situation with the Russian Central Bank not being read into the situation, but it explains a lot. The failed attempt to seize Hostomel by air will probably go down as the worst airborne operation in history. At least the Germans took Crete in the end, and the failure of Market Garden had a negligible impact on the overall course of the war.

You'd think Russia, of all countries, would have learned that a strategy of "kick in the front door, and the whole rotten structure will come crashing down" is a disaster waiting to happen.
