Another capitalist W. Cuba goes into war time economy.

https://english.elpais.com/international/2024-07-02/the-government-of-cuba-declares-itself-in-a-war-time-economy.html?prm=ep-app-cabecera

Another W for imperial powers. Communist Cuba peaked and is now sinking.

China couldn't save its communist ally.

Capitalism is a better system than communism any day.

That is how you know Russia will lose the war. They did not embrace capitalism well enough.

Excerpt from the Discourses on Salt and Iron, 81 B.C.:

The Lord Grand Secretary: Formerly the Princes in the provinces and the demesnes sent in their respective products as tribute. The transportation was vexacious and disorganized; the goods were usually of distressingly bad quality, often failing to repay their transport costs. Therefore Transportation Officers have been provided in every province to assist in the delivery and transportation and for the speeding of the tribute from distant parts. So the system came to be known as equable marketing. A Receiving Bureau has been established at the capital to monopolize all the commodities, buying when prices are low, and selling when prices are high, with the result that the Government suffers no loss and the merchants cannot speculate for profit. This is therefore known as the balancing standard. With the balancing standard people are safeguarded from unemployment; with the equable marketing people have evenly distributed labor. Both of these measures are intended to equilibrate all goods and convenience the people, and not to open the way to profit and provide a ladder to popular misdemeanor.

The Literati: The Ancients in levying upon and taxing the people would look for what the latter were skilled in, and not seek for those things in which they were not adept. Thus the farmers contributed the fruits of their labor, the weaving women, their products. Now the Government leaves alone what the people have and exacts what they have not, with the result that the people sell their products at a cheap price to satisfy demands from above. Recently in some of the provinces and demesnes they ordered the people to make woven goods. The officers then caused the producers various embarassments and bargained with them. What was collected by the officers was not only the silk from Ch'i and T'ao, or cloth from Shu and Han, but also other goods manufactured by the people which were mischievously sold at a standard price. Thus the farmers suffer twice over while the weaving women are doubly taxed. We have not yet seen that your marketing is "equable". As to the second measure under discussion, the government officers swarm out to close the door, gain control of the market and corner all commodities. With commodities cornered, prices soar; with prices rising, the merchants make private deals by way of speculation. Thus the officers are lenient to the cunning capitalists, and the merchants store up goods and accumulate commodities waiting for a time of need. Nimble traders and unscrupulous officials buy in cheap to get high returns. We have not yet seen that your standard is "balanced." For it seems that in ancient times equable marketing was to bring about equitable division of labor and facilitate transportation of tribute; it was surely not for profit or to make trade in commodities.

Lmao, there is evidence that IQ has stagnated and even started to decline. Due to that it's actually possible that some of the smartest neighbors to ever walk this gay rock were those homies 2,000 years ago, like big J. We like to think we stand on the shoulders of giants in every regard but when it comes to cognition and critical thinking capacity / problem solving we may actually be drooling fricking r-slurs compared to year zero demographics.

We are definitely smarter. Better nutrient access and schooling. Only problem being IQ goes up 5-10 points a generation. While cutting edge research gets 10-12x more complex in that same time span. We are going to reach a point where only the smartest humans can track what's going on and that too for barely a decade or two.

They were a pretty interesting mercenary state for international communism, They started fighting Colonial Portugal and Israel and ended with the Soviet's sent them to help Communist Ethiopians smash the Communist Somalis. They were always reliant of Soviet subsidies and sugarmaxxed

By 1969, the worsening state of the Cuban economy became the critical variable in relations between Havana and Moscow. The turning point was reached with the 1970 sugar harvestβ€”the audacious attempt to produce a record-breaking ten million tons of sugar, known as the "Zafra de los diez millones"β€”the sugar cane harvest of ten million [tons]. Speaking to students at the University of Havana in September 1969, Carlos Rafael explained the great importance vested in the harvest. Achieving ten million tons of sugar, he declared, would be Cuba's "second national liberation." Castro, in his push for the record harvest, also focused on the more pragmatic economic benefits such a momentous achievement would have. He exclaimed that if the 1970 zafra reached ten million tons, "there would be an absolute abundance of food, more clothes, more shoes, and better communications. The services will continue to improve, and the years of the next decade would not be the same as the previous ones." This was a paramount goal for Cuban leaders as they sought to rectify the country's economic problems and overcome its underdevelopment. But the attempt failed, despite an enormous effort involving Cuba's entire workforce. In the process, it nearly wrecked the national economy, as all available resources were concentrated on the sugar harvest, leaving the service sectors and industry seriously neglected and essentially negating Cuba's previous efforts to balance agriculture and the other sectors of the economy.

In the first half of the 1980s, Cuba's integration with the other CMEA member-states continued to deepen. In 1983 alone, 87 percent of Cuba's foreign trade was with the CMEA, with sugar accounting for 75 percent of the country's total exports.

The CMEA "transformations" culminated in the organization's dissolution in mid-1991, six months before the Soviet Union disintegrated. The impact of the crisis caused the Cuban gross domestic product (GDP) to decline by 34.8 percent from 1990 to1993. Imports decreased by 75 percent, the annual fiscal deficit rose to 33 percent, and the money supply increased to 66 percent of GDP, yielding enormous inflationary pressures.

Having Cuba as a state would be quite interesting alt-history...

...but then again, making them a state would be a rather daunting task, no? Because like, the government is then gonna have to spend millions or even billions of dollars in trying to Americanize a whole lot of people, not only in terms of teaching English or aligning their culture to fit that of the US (i.e. making them less Catholic and Latin and more Prot and Anglo), but then you're gonna have to update a huge freaking island towards mainland standards. New schools! Fixed roads! Transitioning towards American-style representative democracy from almost-feudalistic monarchism!

It was easy to do it with the Indians (they're not as numerous, and it's far more easy to dominate them militarily), but when you got a larger population (that is almost more capable of revolting)...I wouldn't be so sure. I mean, take Puerto Rico for example; they've been US property for over a century and they still are quite different culturally - and that's a smaller island with less people at that!

Again, I am not inherently against the idea of making new states...but the roadmap for doing so is quite complicated, and maybe not worth the hassle at all... :marseyshrug:

I'm from Miami so I was surrounded by Cubans. Castro is dead of course so these stories are relative to the time. My high school boyfriend was Cuban. His parents escaped Cuba right before Castro took over. They talked a bit about it but they were wealthy and knew what would happen if Castro took over. They came to the US with nothing and built up to a nice life. Whatever you had was taken. If you were wealthy, it all was taken.

My coworker from years ago came here when he was 10. His dad worked for Castro and risked his life to secretly get his kids and wife out of Cuba. My friend visited Cuba when he was older and said you'd take a taxi from a guy with a PhD in physics. There is no opportunity there and he was offered little girls for money because it was the only way they could make money. You have no opportunity in Cuba. Everything belongs to Castro. His parents both had PhDs in comp sci and his dad knew his kids would have a better life in the US. They do too.

Worked with a girl who had only been in the US for 2 years. She wanted to be in IT but again everything belongs to Castro. She said their equipment was from the 1970s and everything you did was monitored. She escaped and wanted badly to build a life for her mom who got her out. She was smart and I hope she got what she wanted.
