Yes, being an r-slur was his biggest crime.
Copyright laws are very lenient on service providers. Basically all you have to do to be in the clear is 1) comply with takedown notices 2) don't upload shit yourself, leave it to the users.

He could honestly have gotten away with it and even kept a lot of his money, all he had to do was not double down on being an r-slur.
Don't think they complied with notices and AFAIK he was still heavily involved in the piracy groups while running megaupload
