From my experience with vapes "exploding" and working in a field where we test thermal runaway for vehicle sized batteries, my money is on explosives being snuck into the pagers. Lithium battery "explosions" look more like a thermite burning aggressively, these videos look like literal grenades. Fact that people were indoors for a lot of these also probably shows it's not some external weapon.
This is some genius level planning though.
