It's because their faith in institutions is faltering. When a country is led by right-wing authoritarians, and the left-wing party seems weak and ineffectual, along with all the government institutions that are meant to protect the general public being destroyed or filled with cronies, more and more people are gonna buy guns.

I know they would have no chance against the behemoth that is American military, but they do not feel safe and that the Democratic Party can protect their rights anymore.

That's partially right, at least. I don't have guns to fight the military though, they're for when violent leftoids decide they're either going to try and take my shit or otherwise frick with it.

Based on recent conflicts, the US military seems especially unable to handle random dudes with rifles and pickup trucks if they persist long enough.

That's what these dorks don't get. It ain't gonna be a war with clear fronts and 2 sides. It's gonna be Jerry and his boy building a pipe bomb for the nearby power substation, it'll be mary two blocks away planning on shooting the mayor, it's Richard sneaking up on a parked patrol car that's what a civilian uprising against the government will look like. Jets and tanks and satellite technology won't help if you can't tell which houses hold dissents and loyalists.

If it really did get so out of hand where most of the country actually sympathizes with an uprising, it would crumble military infrastructure. Eventually they'd face shortages of ammo, parts, and personnel. Most of the damage to the military wouldn't come from combat, as they'd probably win most direct engagements, but rather the steep decline of the American productivity that sustains them.
