He wants to deflect from how wierd his surragacy was. And how the hospital photo shoot he did was even weirder.

Not pictured one bed over: the woman who just suffered through labour and looks like hot exhausted garbage.

I don't even oppose surrogacy (in Aus it has to be altrusitic which is to say it's less transactional / buy a baby) but I DO oppose the weird photoshoot of the gay dudes sitting in a hospital bed as if they actually gave birth. There are dad chairs there that you can sit in and hold your kid without the creepy larp.

I mean, yeah. That was weird. Lying in the bed as if they're the ones who gave birth? I have a lot of problems with commercial surrogacy, and this sums them all up: erasing the reality that a woman is the mother of these children, who will never be involved in their lives or credited with being the biological parent. Two women, maybe, if they had separate egg donor and surrogate for the pregnancy.

And okay, women enter into this as a commercial transaction and don't see the babies as their kids, that's fine. But trying so hard to pretend that what you are doing is normal and equivalent to straight couples who get married and have kids, that you construct an image where you are both simultaneously the mother and the father? That's not normal, guys.

I think the Pope has reasonable objections to surrogacy. Paying mothers to give their baby to a gay couple.
