Is it bad that I don’t think public beheadings for serious crime is a bad thing? But it should also be done to pol*ticians.

I’m a keen believer in three strikes. Doesn’t matter what it is - shoplifting, arson, double parking - you frick up three times and then you get the chop chop.

It is a bad thing

but so is serious crime

putting the heads on spikes in high crime areas would probably reduce crime quite a bit

There's no actual argument for a government that has the infrastructure to permanently imprison people to employ the death penalty outside of emotional ones. We have an imperfect justice system and any system with a death penalty will inevitably kill innocent people. Life sentences can at least be reversed.

It doesn't deter crime. It isn't less expensive. It doesn't make society safer. It just provides more room for error.

"But what about the victims families???" I'm sure they would like to see the perpetrator tortured to death to, but we've already decided that there's a line to how much punishment they can demand. Life in a concrete box is far more of a punishment than a quick death anyway.

Weak and gay.

Life in a concrete box is far more of a punishment than a quick death anyway.

Then why do so many people make plea deals to get life without parole in lieu of the death penalty? Everyone serving life in prison today is one twisted up bedsheet away from the abyss, why do most of them choose life?

Because not wanting to die is a human impulse, and it's easier to be afraid of immediate death than to comprehend the suffering over 50 years of imprisonment.

I don't understand why people use the execution of innocent people as an argument against death penalty.

The point of death penalty is to set an example and scare everyone straight out of committing any more crimes. Killing innocent people has just as much of a scare factor as killing criminals - if not moreso.

This is why Duerte goes around killing innocent families - to scare competitor drug dealers from his son's market.

  • statistical value of a human life (high estimate): $5M

(this can be estimated in various ways by observing how much effort/resources/money people are willing to expend in order to marginally reduce their risk of death, or how much risk they're willing to take in exchange for rewards/money. E.g. gang members and drug addicts value their own lives far lower than other people do.)

  • cost of imprisoning someone per year: $50k

Consider a prisoner whose crime would warrant execution or life imprisonment. Define:

  • probability that the prisoner is innocent: P(innocent)

  • remaining life expectation of prisoner: E(life)

If E(life) * $50k > P(innocent) * $5M, execution should be preferred over life imprisonment.

This is equivalent to:

P(innocent) < E(life) / 100

Unless you're ok with someone paying a 5 million dollar fine for killing someone then this is a stupid argument.

Unless you're ok with someone paying a 5 million dollar fine for killing someone then this is a stupid argument.

It's more about how much you value your own life, e.g. how much money does someone have to give you to do something that carries a 0.1% risk of death? Then multiply that by 1000.

When someone murders you, they do so without your consent.

But when you commit a crime that is punishable by death, you decide to take that risk (die if you get caught and convicted). It's your own decision in a way.
