Tree trimmer dies after falling into wood chipper, police say :marseywoodchipper2:

The incident occurred at approximately 12:53 p.m. on Tuesday in Menlo Park, California, approximately 30 miles south of San Francisco, when the Menlo Park Police Department responded to a report of an incident involving a tree trimmer who had managed to accidentally fall into a wood chipper on the 900 block of Peggy Lane while he was working, police say.

“When police units arrived on scene, a male subject was found deceased from injuries sustained in the incident,” the Menlo Park Police Department said in a statement confirming the fatality.

Authorities from the Menlo Park Fire Protection District and the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office also responded to the tragic accident. The street was shut down while authorities conducted their investigation but all other roads in the area were open to traffic during this period.

The worker’s identity has not yet been released and is currently under the jurisdiction of the coroner’s office while they notify the male victim’s next of kin, authorities said. It is unclear when they will be making a further statement on the identity of the victim and the coroner’s office did not release any further details on the incident.

The Menlo Park Police Department confirmed that his death will be investigated by the Cal/OSHA Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

The German government pledged Tuesday to provide more support to cities and towns struggling to house the more than 1.1 million refugees and migrants who have arrived in the country this year, mostly from war-torn Ukraine but also other countries such as Syria and Afghanistan.

After meeting with state and local officials, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said while the government already allocated federal real estate for tens of thousands of refugees earlier this year, it would immediately provide additional property for about 4,000 refugees to ease the current housing crisis. Faeser also promised financial support but did not give any concrete figures.

Several cities have recently started putting up tents and turned convention centers into temporary accommodation as regular migrant centers have become overcrowded.

“I don’t want to downplay this, we have a tense situation,” Faeser told reporters in Berlin. “That’s why we discussed today how to best coordinate our assistance to refugees ... also in view of the winter months that lie ahead.”

More than 1 million people have entered Germany from Ukraine since Russia attacked the eastern European country on Feb. 24. About a third of them are children and teenagers, and more than 70 percent of the adults are women.

"It's a big humanitarian effort to take good care of the refugees from Ukraine, to provide shelters, to provide daycare centers and schools for the children and to give them social support," Faeser said. She added that Germany was expecting more refugees from Ukraine as Russia escalates its brutal attacks on Ukraine and people there may be struggling even more to survive during the cold winter months.

While the interior minister stressed that Germany was ready to welcome more Ukrainians despite the difficult housing situation, she struck a significantly different tone regarding asylum-seekers from other countries, especially those trying to reach Germany via the so-called Balkans migration route.

"The number of asylum applications has increased in recent months, as has the number of unauthorized entries. Not only in Germany, but overall along the European Unions' external borders, the pressure is currently increasing," Faeser said. "That's why we also have to clearly ensure a limit."

As of the end of September, 134,908 people had applied for asylum in Germany in 2022. That is around a third more than in the same period last year, according to figures from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. However, it's still a far call from 2015-16, when more than 1 million migrants from countries like Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan applied for asylum in Germany.

The figures for asylum applications in 2022 are much lower than the total number of refugees because Ukrainians can enter Germany without a visa and do not need to apply for asylum.

In an effort to keep other migrants from crossing into the country, the interior minister said Germany would extend and increase its border controls to Austria for another six months and also intensify controls to the Czech Republic.

The move comes after Austria and the Czech Republic introduced temporary border controls to Slovakia last month to keep migrants from entering their countries.

Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia all belong to the European Union's visa-free Schengen zone, where residents of member nations typically can cross borders without presenting passports or visas. However, Schengen countries have adopted temporary border controls in the past for various reasons, including to curb illegal migration and to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Germany also sharply criticized Serbia --- which is an EU candidate country but not a member yet --- for its visa-free regime with some non-EU countries. Citizens from India, for example, are increasingly flying to Serbia, where they don't need visas unlike for EU countries, and then trying to cross into wealthier western European countries via the Balkans route.

"To be clear, Serbia's visa practice is unacceptable," Faeser said. "This also contributes to the movements on the Balkan route. Serbia must adapt its visa rules to those of the European Union. This is a clear expectation of the German government."

An alleged member of the neon-cloaked “Green Goblin” gang accused of pummeling two 19-year-old women on a Times Square subway train was released without bail Tuesday — with her lawyer insisting she didn’t do anything wrong.

Mariam Issouf, 26, was cut loose on supervised release after being arraigned on a second-degree robbery charge in the Oct. 2 caught-on-video assault — one day after she turned herself in to cops with her defense attorney at her side.

“She did nothing wrong,” lawyer John Russo claimed as he walked out of court with Issouf — who covered her head with a leather jacket to obscure her face.

“My client has no record,” Russo said. “My client attacked no one. She assaulted not one of the victims and is seen on videotape saying, ‘I want no part of this. Let’s go.'”

Russo claimed that his client, who was dressed all in black for her court appearance, even “tried to assist the victim.”

The NYPD has identified three other members of the goblin gang — Emily Soto, 34, and Ciante Alston and Dariana Peguero, both 26 — in the shocking assault.

All four live in the housing authority’s Greensboro Houses, sources said.

At least a half-dozen women wearing full-body, neon green leotards punched and tossed around the two victims around 2 a.m., taking their cellphones and handbags, police said.

The angry mother of one of the victims called the gang “complete animals” last week, and said her daughter was celebrating her birthday with a pal when she was attacked.

“All these men sitting there taking videos and watching, and none of them helped while a group of 10 women were beating two young girls,” the mom fumed.

She accused Gov. Kathy Hochul and state pols of “making these ridiculous laws and letting savages walk the streets with nothing but a slap on the wrist.

“Watch the videos of these two girls getting beaten by a gang of grown women, and imagine it was your daughter, granddaughter, sister, mother or friend. Put yourself in that situation,” she said.

She added: “Animals belong behind bars. Make an example of them.”

Issouf’s attorney, however, insisted that his client “did nothing wrong,” adding, “and being called an animal and a savage in the press is beneath every member of the press and everyone in this city.”

Sources confirmed that Issouf has no known criminal record, but did make headlines in the past — when she was a 5-year-old and was kidnapped by a teen neighbor.

Issouf was playing outside her building around 11 a.m. July 10, 2001, when she was grabbed and taken away in a gypsy cab, police said.

Iran Press/ Iran News: In some cities across Iran, there have been sporadic protests and unrest after the death of Mahsa Amini.

On Sunday, Romina Perez, the Bolivian ambassador to Iran, in a meeting with Tabriz mayor Yaghoub Hoshyar, said: "Bolivia and Iran are two brother countries, and we have anti-imperialist ideas and stand together against imperialism.

Stating that the two countries could establish a friendship house, the ambassador added: "There are many common points between Tabriz and the cities of Bolivia, so they should expand their connections."

Romina Perez condemned the west's role in supporting rioters as apparent interference in Iran's internal affairs.

Groomercord channel used as evidence against accused libertarian teacher

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — As sixth graders, the students thought their teacher at Davisville Middle School was a creep.

They saw him leering at some girls, singling them out with pet nicknames, encouraging them to dance for him. They saw him treating boys with contempt, and sometimes cruelty.

The teacher, who was also a coach and involved with extracurricular activities, told the students that he’d weathered parents’ complaints for nearly 30 years, and there was nothing anyone could do to him.

By seventh grade, some of the boys had started taking notes, documenting what the teacher was saying and doing, particularly to the girls, at the school.

In an exclusive interview with The Boston Globe, one of the boys described how in January 2021, he and his friends decided to start their “Libertarian Database,” to track the teacher’s words and actions.

They had tried talking to adults about what they heard and saw. None of the adults listened or took them seriously, the student told the Globe. It made the boys uncomfortable to see the girls in their class struggling to deal with their teacher flirting with them.

Get Rhode Map

A weekday briefing from veteran Rhode Island reporters, focused on the things that matter most in the Ocean State.

“Sometimes they’d laugh. Sometimes they just kind of just sit there awkwardly,” the boy recalled. “Even the ones that said he was ‘creepy’ laughed, because they were obviously not trying to tick him off or anything. So they’re just fake laughing, awkwardly laughing.”

“Other students noticed it too,” the boy added.

And so, on Jan. 5, 2021, a small group of seventh-grade boys decided to stick up for the girls.

They set up a subchannel on Groomercord, named it after the teacher, and called it the “Libertarian Database.” “Post the [teacher’s] libertarian moments and quotes here so we can get evidence,” one boy wrote.

“This is now the official chat that we will later use as evidence against [the teacher] about libertarianism in case anything does come up in the future and we do turn out to be right,” wrote another.

During COVID, as they attended class online, they’d open the Groomercord channel on a split-screen and document the teacher’s comments in real time:

“You all love me so choose love.”

“You gotta stand up and dance now.”

Everyone “in bathing suits tomorrow.”

Once they were back in class in person, the boys jotted down notes to add to the channel later: Flirting with one girl. Teasing another. Calling the girls “sweetheart” and “sunshine.” Asking one girl to take off her shoes and try wiggling her toes without moving her pinkies.

“I felt bad for [the girls] because sometimes it just seems like it was a humiliating thing,” the boy told the Globe. “He’d play a song and he’d make one of them get up and dance.”

When the school year ended, the boys told incoming students about the Groomercord channel and encouraged them to keep tabs on the teacher. All in all, eight boys were involved, he said.

And then, in late April 2022, the teacher was escorted out of the middle school.

Interim Superintendent Michael Waterman announced that he had placed a teacher on leave and was launching an investigation into allegations that the teacher had stalked a pre-teen girl at the middle school while he was her coach, and had been inappropriate with other girls.

The accusations were made by lawyer Timothy J. Conlon, who is representing the girl’s family and is also representing former athletes at North Kingstown High School who have accused former coach Aaron Thomas of conducting naked “fat tests” on teenage athletes.

The middle school girl’s family had complained to the previous superintendent, but it wasn’t until they threatened to get a restraining order that the teacher was made to stop coaching middle schoolers in North Kingstown.

The teacher went on to coach in two other school districts, while continuing to teach at Davisville, earning more than $87,000 a year, according to school records. And parents at another school district told the North Kingstown family that the teacher had coaching sessions in his basement and appeared to fixate on a select few girls, according to Conlon.

Though the teacher wasn’t named, the Davisville school community knew whom Waterman was talking about. At home, the boy’s mother told him that people were being asked to come forward with information.

That’s when he told her that he and his friends had been keeping a log of the teacher’s actions.

“He’s always been kind, looking out for kids, even early on in elementary school, if he saw a teacher yelling inappropriately at another kid, it would really bother him,” the boy’s mother told the Globe. “He’s like, ‘That’s not OK. You know, it’s not OK to talk to a child that way.’”

While she knew that the teacher was “angry and mean” towards boys — she complained to the school after her son told her about it — she said she didn’t realize what else was happening in the classroom.

That’s why they kept the log, he told the Globe.

“I don’t think there was a single adult who would ever — like their parents, my mom, like anybody in the school — who had ever really taken the whole thing seriously before,” he added.

The boy’s mother contacted Conlon, and now the “Libertarian Database” is in the hands of the US attorney’s Office, the state Department of Children, Youth, and Families, the state Department of Education, and with lawyer Matthew Oliverio, who is conducting the school’s internal investigation.

“I did not ever think this would actually be used as evidence, but we always had it as if it was,” said the boy, who is now 15 and a student at North Kingstown High School. “So I’m glad that we did, even though it might have seemed like slightly stupid at times.”

Waterman said Thursday that the teacher remains on leave. His name has not been publicly released because of the ongoing investigations. But students and parents know who he is.

“Everybody has talked about it, since sixth grade, how much they’ve hated his behavior and all of that,” the boy said. “That’s also why I feel like even if their investigation finds nothing, putting him back in the school would be a disaster.”

He wished the adults had taken the students’ complaints seriously, the boy said. Ignoring the problem made things worse.

”They need to definitely gain the trust back because no one believes that they’ll be taken seriously,” he said. “Especially guys reporting this type of stuff. Because every time that it has, they’ve been told, ‘Oh, you shouldn’t say such things.’ ”

Liberal Florida prosecutor fired by Ron DeSantis sues to combat 'the erosion of our democracy' - Alternet.org

Ron DeSantis responded by suspending him. Warren discussed his suspension and his decision to sue DeSantis’ office during an interview with the Daily Beast, stressing that he isn’t simply suing to get his job back but rather, because he believes DeSantis has crossed a dangerous line by suspending an elected official. The Hillsborough County prosecutor wasn’t appointed to that position by DeSantis, but rather, was chosen by voters. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle, who has “had some experience throwing a damp towel on DeSantis power grabs.

“In 2021, DeSantis and MAGA Republicans tried to throw Trump and extreme right-wing conservatives a lifeline by passing a law forbidding any social media company from deplatforming a political candidate,” Pagliery explains. In Warren’s case, the judge has already refused the DeSantis Administration’s request to dismiss the lawsuit. Warren is arguing that because he is not a DeSantis appointee, but rather, someone who was chosen by voters in his county, DeSantis has seriously overstepped his bounds by suspending him. Warren’s lawsuit against DeSantis comes at a time when he is busy campaigning for reelection.

A Mason-Dixon poll released in late September found Democratic challenger Charlie Crist, a former Florida governor and ex-Republican, trailing DeSantis by 11 percent.

President Barack Obama described his political opponents as angry, racist, and sexist during a private conversation with some of Europe’s elites this summer, according to a newly revealed transcript.

“Sometimes it just turns out they’re mean, they’re racist, they’re sexist, they’re angry,” Obama said. “And your job is then to just beat them because they’re not persuadable.”

Obama offered his candid advice privately to European leaders in June after speaking publicly at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit in June.

But he also warned attendees away from sometimes getting too “filled up in our own self-righteousness.”

“We’re so convinced that we’re right that we forget what we are right about,” he said.

Details of his remarks were revealed in a new CNN report about the former president’s political activities during the midterms.

Obama is expected to limit his appearances on the campaign trail for the midterm elections, according to the report, despite his concern about the future of democracy.

If Democrats lose big in the midterm elections, Obama is preparing a summit to rally his party two weeks after Election Day.

The event is described as a “Democracy Forum” which will focus on the future of global democracy.

“We’ll explore a range of issues – from strengthening institutions and fighting disinformation, to promoting inclusive capitalism and expanded pluralism – that will shape democracies for generations to come,” Obama wrote in a letter to donors.

Neom: Saudi Arabia sentences tribesmen to death for resisting displacement

A Saudi court sentenced three members of the Howeitat, a tribe forcibly ejected to make way for the $500 bn Neom megacity, to death earlier this month for resisting displacement, a UK-based rights group has reported.

Shadli al-Huweiti is the brother of Abdul Rahim al-Howeiti, a 43-year-old Tabuk resident who was shot dead by Saudi special forces in April 2020 after protesting the government's eviction orders, including in videos he regularly posted to YouTube.

Neom: Yet-to-be-built Saudi resort chosen to host 2029 Asian Winter Games Read More » Two other Howeitat members - Abdulilah al-Howeiti and Abdullah Dukhail al-Howeiti - were given 50-year prison terms and 50-year travel bans in August for supporting their family's refusal to be evicted from their homes in the kingdom's Tabuk province.

They were given 34 years and 45 years respectively over tweets critical of the Saudi government.

Adel al-Saeed, vice president of the European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights said in a series of tweets that the new death sentences reveal how the penalty is being used "in an unprecedented way to include all forms of objection to government decisions".

Middle East Eye has asked the Saudi government for comment.

2015: "The FDA concluded, 'FDA believes that the arguments presented, individually and collectively, do not establish the safety of SLH for consumption, nor do they point to a general recognition of safety.'"

2017: "It was always unlikely that SLH would have strong and obvious toxic effects in the short term; any adverse effects from a novel food substance would likely be subtle. Long-term studies with relatively large numbers of animals are required in order to reveal the significance of such effects. Given these requirements, it seems clear that Impossible Foods’ study was statistically weak. There were too few animals in each test group (10 per s*x per group) and again, the study was too short in duration (28 days in a rat is equivalent to just 2-3 years in a human) to clarify any health concerns from long-term consumption of this product."

"The only way of ascertaining if potentially adverse effects seen in short studies are truly adverse or have lasting consequences is to extend the study length to the rats’ full lifetimes (2-3 years) and to do multigenerational testing. In this case, neither was done."
