I always thought of Downward Spiral as being the basic b-word album because of Closer going mainstream. All the pop idiots were gushing over how much they suddenly loved NIN and pretended they had deep thoughts for like 6 months.
TDS would probably be the basic b-word answer, but it’s also their best album by a country mile. The textures on that album STILL sound like something that could be released today and not sound dated.
