“How will we travel in the Solarpunk utopia?” Smooth brains :marseysmoothbrain: at r/solarpunk imagine a world without planes :marseyplane:

/r/solarpunk is a sub for those interested in “solarpunk aesthetics” which means carbon free degrowth utopias for their scifi stories/games, etc.

Naturally their zero CO2 emissions world has no place for planes.

>We travel across oceans in blimps and sail boats.

>I imagine solar sail boats or potentially algae powered? It would need to be something regenerative and we would need to sacrifice speed. There is no “weekend in Paris” and is a bit more arduous.

A bit arduous is quite an understatement

>Without the pressure of a capitalist rat-race, I hope people take traveling sabbaticals. These will by design not be quick. So, hitching a ride on a freighter (sail/ammonia/solar powered) or using a hydrogen-filled dirigible to get around seem like good options.

Once we get rid of capitalism everyone will be free to sail around the world :marseywholesome:

This is literally how it was done for all of history until the mid-1800s.

Sailing across the oceans was quite dangerous back then, I doubt redditcels will enjoy being in the middle of the Atlantic during a storm.

sail boats. people will have a lot more time to travel. in fact the voyage will be as important as the time spent in the destination, if not more important.

in fact i'm willing to bet that, in the future people will spend way more time travelling the world than we do now. because our "union" will not be because we share products it will be because we will share experiences.

humanity will not be tied economically it will be tied because we, our friends and family will have shared real experiences all around the world. no longer people will look at someone else from another country as another species because we will all travel around the world.

They are the temporarily embarrassed capitalists Steinbeck was talking about.

Except for the field organizers of strikes, who were pretty tough monkeys and devoted, most of the so-called Communists I met were middle-class, middle-aged people playing a game of dreams. I remember a woman in easy circumstances saying to another even more affluent: ‘After the revolution even we will have more, won't we, dear?' Then there was another lover of proletarians who used to raise heck with Sunday picknickers on her property.

I guess the trouble was that we didn't have any self-admitted proletarians. Everyone was a temporarily embarrassed capitalist. Maybe the Communists so closely questioned by the investigation committees were a danger to America, but the ones I knew—at least they claimed to be Communists—couldn't have disrupted a Sunday-school picnic. Besides they were too busy fighting among themselves.”

One of favorite heuristic theories is that rich kids advocate for communism so hard because they're 100% certain no revolt or reform will ever take their financial bedrock, and “progressive” policies and communist advocacy do absolutely nothing but enable their families to pillage more from the government.

They literally “have more” after every single “revolution.”

My impression (from knowing a few of these) is that they are blind to their privilege.

I know this chick in her mid-40s who is an "artist" and still acts like she's in her late-teens/early-twenties. She is largely supported by her mother and step-father (mom is a successful academic, step-dad made his money in the tech industry in the 90s), yet she thinks she's one of the downtrodden masses since her step-father will only pay for a 2-bedroom apartment instead of the kinds of places the PMCs in our social circle can afford. Constantly going on about capitalism and gentrification and arts funding and minorities and the whole progressive smorgasbord.

She does that because she literally does not see all the ways she's being supported. When daddy pays the rent directly to the landlord, she's not seeing the $2500 changing hands. When he buys her car, or pays for the insurance, or pays for her phone and phone plan, whatever, she doesn't see the amount of money he's lavishing on her. When mommy got her into university, she didn't see the ranking of her application relative to the others, so she never got to question if she got into a separate queue. She's a queer bisexual pansexual who has only dated dudes but totally finds women so attractive, and she's 1/64th BIPOC so she's definitely oppressed.

It's more that despite being somewhat wealthy and affluent, lower upper class usually, they're not at the tippy top of the pyramid. They feel like they can imagine themselves as "Head central planner" ticking boxes rather than a man in a coal mine. There's also the hidden motivation of having financial superiority secure, so they spend their time signalling status by wasting time on social causes so they can be considered morally superior as well.

I think Steinbeck above is a bit naive about the dangers these types pose. Just because someone appears incompetent, middling or petty when the party is still trifles, doesn't mean they don't switch to sadistic boardroom backstabbers when the party starts gaining power.

Wait, is this where the "temporarily embarrassed capitalists" thing, that well-to-do socialists use to describe working class rightoids came from?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yes. It's not that the "working class rightoids" think they might get rich but just haven't yet, it's that they are "well-to-do socialists" embarrassed by their economic class.

Kurt Vonnegut also had a line about most Americans thinking they were "temporarily embarrassed millionaires"

No, that's everyone misquoting Steinbeck. The temporarily embarrassed millionaires are the ones snapping their fingers at the DSA meeting while the proles are actually at work.

middle-class, middle-aged people playing a game of dreams

I met this lady and she's probably 70ish now

she was in retail instead of whatever she considered more glamorous and she stayed mad about it bc rich people exist

its infuriating ppl refuse to enjoy the world around them bc of envy :derpwhy:

You got fresh food, you got a choice of clothes, you got a washer and dryer IN YOUR HOUSE and dont have to wash panties in the shower like u live in the hood

you could participate in local culture, but no, keep scrolling instagram why don't you... theres rich people on there

Forcing them to extrapolate on their utopic beliefs can be entertaining if they're so airheaded they don't realize you're mocking them.

OK cool, so you and your friends have abolished capitalism and money--hooray for you! Let's take that vacation you wanted! Oh wait. How are you going to get fuel for your vehicle? Capitalism is gone, remember? The rat race is over. No one is around anymore to sell you fuel. Guess you're walking.

So 700 miles and a pair of VERY tired feet later, you made it to Utopia Beach! Now let's find our hotel and--oh wait. There is no hotel. They're all closed because well, we don't need businesses anymore! Can't pick any random room though, the hotels are all filled with free, stinky hobos of questionable mental stability.

Sounds like fun. :marseydespair:

No, you see, vehicles won't need gas. We only use fossil fuels because of the greedy capitalists. Don't you know 110% of carbon emissions just come from 100 companies?

And housing is a human right, so the government can just provide everyone a beach house since there won't be any landlords to artificially restrict the supply of beachfront property.

I like to remind them that if housing is a human right, what about house maintenance? Living in an overgrown room with no power or water is hardly what they meant, right? So are the roofers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and other professions that maintain houses suddenly going to work for free? :marseysmug3:

This is why Ben Shapiro says that claiming healthcare is a human right is basically enslaving doctors.
