!trekkies and other sci fi locations and their distances

This is something that writers (at least on TV shows) are very reticent to spell out because you don't want to paint yourself into a corner. You don't want the audience to know what distances you're dealing with, because maybe this week you're doing a western and want the ship so far away that it can't call back to its base. Maybe next week you want to do something about political intrigue where you've got to be in constant contact with all the known powers in the galaxy.

Kerbal Space Program ruined a lot of stuff for me because it teaches you that geography in space has absolutely nothing to do with the way geography works on Earth. Like Wolf 359 is near Sol but the chances of you going anywhere near it on the way are astronomical. Same with that cool shot of going past Jupiter on the way to Earth. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so neurodivergent. Ruins everything.
