How did deep sleepers survive evolution?

I'm a deep sleeper, I slept through an earthquake once. How did that benefit our ancestors? Wouldn't I have been eaten by a sabertooth tiger? Or were deep sleepers protected because they were more effective for the tribe when they were awake since they got a good night sleep?

Deep sleeper ancestors were chuds, who knew that nothing ever happens, and thus never woke up for anything.

It's a real head scratcher. Probably something like you said, they were able to get a good night's sleep while bugs and snakes crawled over them.

Had a housemate who didn't wake up for the fire alarm, the carbon monoxide detector malfunctioning, me shouting at our water heater pipe exploding, and the dog losing its shit while some tweaker tried to bust in the front door. She is going to die in her sleep one day.

She's so lucky. That's how I want to go.

Being Australian tho, I'll probably end up getting r*ped to death by kangaroos to the soundtrack of a kookaburra laughing its goddarn head off in the background.

I think a paleolithic predator would be in and out of the cave long before even the lightest of sleepers reacted so I don't think deep sleeping would make a difference. I also think they would grab one unlucky cave-person and run off. However, I always assumed that the prehistoric tribes which survived and prospered kept lookouts like meerkats

How did invalids survive evolution?

I'm a double amputee, I fell out of my wheelchair once and would've died if a stranger didn't help me. How did that benefit our ancestors? Wouldn't I have been eaten by a sabertooth tiger? Or were disabled's protected because they were more effective for the tribe when they were fuctioning since they had less limbs and thus needed less energy?

Well, obviously wheelchairs didn't exist a million years ago.

If you lost your legs, you had to grow your own wheels out of your bloody stumps, which is exactly what our ancestors did.

the real question is why didn't this take over everything when it seems to be the most fricking unfair thing ever with no downsides. I guess it's only a huge advantage in modern times since time is much more of a bottleneck for productive activities now that other bottlenecks have been blown open. but you'd think even in ancestral times you could get enough of an edge to make up for the 8% higher metabolic needs or whatever.

People had different sleep schedules, I.e night owls vs early birds and this allowed some people to be awake at night when others were sleeping

Your stupid wife would wake you up, but you didn't realize this because you have no wife. You have no girlfriend. You are an incel.

The concerned hisses of your pet velociraptors would still woke you up, stupid.

Grug think deep, uninterrupted, sleep important

She-grug will wake up first anyway

Only need one light sleeper in the tribe. Have to remember that humans evolved living in groups. One of the biggest advantages humans had going for them was a sophisticated social order/collaboration.

You could ask the same about sleep itself as a concept. Why didn't we all evolve to be like sharks and never sleep, since being asleep just leaves you vulnerable?

There must be some benefit to sleep and that probably applies to deep sleep too. I imagine there's a sweet spot of some kind that evolution varies around over time

The industrial revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

Your circadian rhythm and sleep cycles and completely fricked compared to even the worst of the worst 500 years ago.

Nurture not nature.

most animals hunt based on movement so they wouldnt target a sleeping human, and animals who hunted humans were easiest prey for us because we mogged them with cowtools and tactics.

And you're wrong.

The thing about privilege is you fail to understand the impact of bigotry.

You see it is an innocuous comment because you don't deal with the impacts of it. Your biggest concern is thise darn kids on the street, check your privilege before telling other people how racism affects them.
