Aperture synthesis. It's why the giant ones aren't really getting made, because the cost of making a few smaller ones that are sync'd is so much lower, the chances for fricking something up is lower to boot. You can see this even in non-terrestrial 'scopes, part of what made the James Webb so groundbreaking especially when compared to Hubble (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubble_Space_Telescope#Flawed_mirror).
