When I was a teen I was so obsessed with raccoons :marseyraccoonhug:, I wish that we had the North American ones here in the land of the !macacos, we only have this sub-species of raccoons known this sub-group of raccoons known as "Mão-Pelada" (Naked Hand), known in English as Crab-eating raccoon, who are thinner and smaller than the North American raccoons:

Also all raccoon species, South and North American alike, are called "Guaxinim".

According to Eduardo Navarro, in his Dictionary of Ancient Tupi (2013), "raccoon" and "jaguacinim" come from the ancient Tupi îagûasinĩ. Its Tupi name seems to contain the verb sining, which means to clang, like a rattlesnake, which is in accordance with the sound produced by the animal. (Compare with boicininga, another name for the rattlesnake.)
