Dumb question (I am r-slurred), but isn't the main point of immigration is to counteract population decline? If so, why is there no housing and people are packed together like sardines.

I was wondering that myself. I guess it's because populations have condensed around cities. There isn't enough housing in the big cities.
That's how it is in the US anyway, there's plenty of affordable housing in places people don't want to live.

That's how it is in Europe too, rural areas are getting depopulated fast since all young adults run to the city as soon as possible. Some governments are offering special benefits to whoever wants to move to some semi-abandoned village but almost no one accepts the offer.

Population decline isn't immediate. You can see what's coming down the road 30-40 years based on demographic.
Based on the wests demographics, there's gonna be a major worker shortage once the last of the boomers retire since generations post boomers were smaller, this is why governments are opening the flood gates now.
Thing is, poors have this pesky habit of "retiring", "golden years" and "burdening the system" in their final decades, so you don't actually see housing become more abundant until the boomers actually die out
