There is a very simple reason why calling them weird works.
They are fascists.
Fascism is not complicated. It is at heart an authoritarian ideology which gains power by othering outgroups and promising that getting rid of their chosen scapegoat will remove all problems from life.
Fascism is a hypercapitalist system designed to accrue money and power for those at the top and sometimes called a necessary outcome of late-stage capitalism.
Fascism thrives on envoking fear, terror and alarm in those who oppose it and those they choose to persecute.
This is why calling them weirdos works. They want you to be afraid. For the leaders you being afraid of them means they get away with their crimes and horrible behaviour. For the followers you being afraid means they feel powerful.

How is that "hypercapitalism", when the state enforces a monoply and there by eliminates competition? How could that be possibly considered a free market?

"Weird" is an effective attack because, unlike a lot of past messaging from that crowd, it's not a pearl-clutching, sanctimonious, hyperbolic word salad like the essay from a self-important reddit janny loser that's been copied here.

How is furry capitalist? The fandom is based almost exclusively around content and characters created by members. The artwork and costumes are made within the community. The conventions are nonprofit, and give heavily to charities. Furry culture is heavily socialist, my dude.
