Juneteenth is a real event which was celebrated by some people before 2020 predominately in majority African American communities or schools. This much is true.

The only reason it’s a federal holiday however is because a fetanyl addict was unjustly killed when detained by police for using counterfeit money in a convenience store at the end of May. The resulting social outrage led to mass protests as well as violent riots during June. In an effort to quell social discontent without having to solve any of the core problems our benevolent elected overlords graced us with a new federal holiday.

It was celebrated in some states for like 30-50 yrs after the Civil War, mostly by Southern black people, and then kind of dwindled away until 2020. They say some people were still celebrating it continously but I lived in Atlanta and never saw anything about it.

This is such a bullshit holiday, Texas was just the last confederate state to fall, not the end of slavery. There was still legal slavery in the US till the 13th Amendment went into effect. Not all the pro slave states joined the Confederacy.

Iirc it was a regional black holiday in Texas. So real, but not broadly known until recently. No idea why it became "the one," but I do think we should have a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery.

Juneteenth exists only because there was no federal holiday in June and the emancipation proclamation went into effect on new years day. I'll literally never believe otherwise.
