They want grandma and grandpa near to help along uncles? Sounds great but how is that in conflict with the "nuclear family" or why does it make the nuclear family bad?

The idea of a 'nuclear family' being the end all be all of social organization is such a ridiculous idea to have if you have any historical knowledge or context at all.
There are literally countless examples of people and cultures throughout history with vastly different family dynamics, societies where children are raised communally or with multiple sets of parents were a REGULARITY in the ancient world. As a matter of well documented historic fact, the concept of a 'Nuclear Family' has literally only existed since the 1920's. The human race has been surviving without the concept of a nuclear family for vastly longer than it has.
What does "raised communally" even means? The extended families of the old days closely knitted and distrustful, where do they get that communally bullshit? And there were still parents and children, and the parents always did most of the work of raising them. Why so much anger?
Reddit is crawling with these churchy types complaining about promiscuity or "porn addiction" nonstop, it's so weird.

The one contributing factor to the nosedive in mental health that younger generations have experienced that I never see discussed in mainstream outlets is family size, but that would force sociology/psychology/psychiatrycels to acknowledge that their role in society has been harmful in contributing to the delegitimization of parents and traditional values in favor of an expert class.

Honestly it's not just the family size, but quality as well. There are many dysfunctional large families which are super toxic and there are many lovable small families, but I agree that close knitted functional large families are great for mental health.

Another possible perspective is that having lots of siblings dilutes the burden of parental expectations
so on one side of the spectrum you have some r-selected species like crickets or something, where parents don't really give a shit about any given individual offspring and most of them starve
and at the other end there's all the one child policy

I think I get what you mean, but the problem is that large families like in the old days are not feasible anymore, at least not unless you're well-off. Middle-class couples don't have the resources nor the time to raise 5+ children, especially if the wife also has to work to provide. In the old days rural couples had 10 children because they were assets (even if modern contraception wasn't available, urban families were always much smaller), they helped them run their farms and the eldest kids would take care of the younger ones, it was never about making the kids happy or comfortable.
