And then they ate the moon.

Moon au ravoir de la cuisine. The newest fad of the 21st century.

In 2040, SpaceX managed to release it's newest nuclear powered reusable rockets, which brought the costs of sub orbital flights down to below $10 per pound. Or in the case of millionaires made it affordable to collect moon dust and moon soil at the cost of $10,000 per pound.

For the first 2 decades it was little more than a collectible. Something to show your friends on a trip around the house during the house party. It was only after 2062, with advancements in curing cancer, lung diseases, brain damage, and a myriad group of various other fatal sicknesses that mishandling moon dust could cause, that new doors were now opened for experimentation.

Gyliad Von Matten was the first man to eat moon dust. He put it in a cake mix, a 100 grams of moon dust mixed in with a kg of batter. He was in the news that day, on the second page in large bold print; describing in detail the taste of the dish, of how it was like an addition of milky chalk in his food. He had a straight forward manner and stated for the record that he didn't care for the flavor, but the excitement of eating death itself was invigorating to him.

A month later he was wheelchair bound, and in another he had recovered.

What nobody had realized at that moment was that Von Matten has opened up the doors to the next trillion dollar industry of the 2060's and 70's. While the world had forgotten his name within weeks, his actions had been recorded and a plan had formed in a middle aged CEO's mind in Arizona. At that time he was in the insurance business, which wasn't doing so great in the future where almost all activities were becoming risk free. In the next meeting he put forward an idea to the boardroom that would have gotten him fired five years ago," What if the company were to create the risk and then offset it themselves with their own insurance?"

It was a close call. The motion was agreed to by a vote in favor of 5-4.

It was the year 2065 when the first moon cuisine hotel was opened, within a km range of three hospitals not counting the one right inside the hotel; none of which were ever advertised.

They had special offers, where they sold the food, every item and drink mixed with some moon dust; along with an insurance plan for long term guests.

It was a hit among the bourgeoisie, and within 5 years there were 3 such hotels across the city. With another 5 hotels in the next five years.

Initially there were some activists that would protest outside these hotels calling out the decadence and wastefulness of the people, but they were often beaten up and kicked out by men in unmarked suits who came out of the hotels and returned without a word. Nobody took them seriously as they did not add to the economy.

Until 2076 one would have found most mentions of the hotel chains among advertisements catering to the elite along with fastest growing business articles. News media once again shifted to bring the conversation to the common man once the protestors who were once made up of hippies were now replaced by scientists and astronomers across the world; the moon was shrinking, they announced. It was already 2 feet smaller in radius. The people were eating too much of the moon.

Initially there was concern regarding this shrinking of the moon, until the media channels were informed by their true owners that encouraging this line of thinking would result in losses numbering in the billions. The narrative shifted, now only speaking in terms of how minuscule 2 feet were.

The people who had initially been appalled overnight found themselves in support of the moon cuisine business. After all, it was providing jobs, it was helping the economy, it was supporting the medical industry who could now use the money to research more diseases. For no reason at all, the people watching their screens suddenly realized that they had always known that the scientists were worrying about nothing at all.

It was 2080 when the videos starting going around of the waves of the ocean behaving erratically. Older locals talking about how the waves were no longer coming as fast or as far up the shore as they used to.

In addition the summers were getting hotter and the winters were getting colder. The ozone layer had been repaired by then, and all the carbon removed from the atmosphere. Nobody knew what was causing all of this.

In the sky the moon now looked like a plain white marble, with not a single crater to be found.

In the media there were to be no scientists found for interviews, only bureaucrats. They all said the same thing, nobody knew what was causing all this.

It was by 2090 that the tides stopped altogether.

It was by 2100 that the summers disappeared.

It was by 2120 that the Earth went off it's orbit floating out in space towards the sun. With every politician of the world talking about how no one could have seen this coming.

The moon was no where to be found, only the stars lit the skies.
