Unit 8200 does their SIGINT collection (listening in on phone calls). They've been very effective in the past, so Israelis put a lot of faith in them. Obviously something went terribly wrong leading up to Oct 7, but was it their fault? Unit 8200 collects raw intelligence but then they send it to the analysts to make sense of it.
Of course it's hard to know wtf happened when so much is classified but I don't see why Unit 8200 is getting so much blame. The analysts definitely screwed up really bad at interpreting the intelligence given to them so I'm not sure if 8200 giving them more would have helped. And I doubt they could have been that helpful since Hamas wasn't so stupid that they were talking about their attack plans on cell phones. What about all the other intelligence sources? Why didn't Shin Bet bring in more human intelligence? Why didn't anyone notice the training camps where Hamas was rehearsing in plain view?
Beyond that, this wasn't just an intelligence failure. A few hundred guys were left on the Gaza border to defend against 30,000 Hamas. The IDF wildly overestimated the ability of their own forces and the wall.
