TLDR: They expected Hezbollah was just about to figure out that the pagers were tampered with so that's why they set them off now.
This explains a lot. I was really confused at how they could be smart enough to pull off an operation like this but then stupid enough to set it off at a random time. You would expect an attack like this to happen on day 1 of an invasion when it would cause maximum chaos.

It's true. Israeli Arabs hate the Palestinians far more than Israeli Jews do. If the Bedouins were running this war their would be a hundred Palestinians dead for every Jew, a thousand for every dead Israeli Muslim, and ,ten thousand for every bedouin. The Bedouins are a remarkably likable people, but mercy, restraint, and forgiveness are not among their many virtues. They are still the horse-riding desert nomads of old, and blood calls for blood. Ironically they're significantly closer to the Muslim ideal than any Palestinian group.
