Anyone else think Youtube's changed their algorithm to show less preference for videos with higher views and/or more preference for newer videos?

I've been noticing this myself for a while and have also seen people bring it up incidentally on Reddit, etc. Like today I got recomended a day old video with 31 views Titled

(I've shown very little to no previous interest in David Foster Wallace, Coca Cola, or League of Legends). Also on my front page is a 2 day old video with 216 views called

.

Personally, I think this is a great change, but I'm not sure what Youtube's end goal is. I've read people say they're trying to copy TikTok but the thing is a Tiktok is a ~30 second time commitment, whereas for a Youtube video it's more like 10 minutes, which I don't think anyone's going to spend given how irrelevant some of these videos are. I'm definitely an outlier here as the only reason I think it's a good change is because I love hunting down obscure crazy people, and this will make that slightly easier.

I've noticed this too, going back a year. It's always a single video though. It's like they have included a wildcard spot among all the super popular recommendations.

actually seems like a good idea, if you searched something generic it would end up being the same old videos always feeding back into the algorithm even if a newer video is better

Sometimes it's a good video too, I support it

this video

touches on it

imo I think they have a certain number of slots that use a special algorithm to get you to watch something really different/low view count especially if you've been scrolling a lot recently. Which I also think more people have been since the normal recommendations have gotten worse over the past couple years

That video showed up in my recommended when it had a few thousand views which I found funny

I've noticed it too and I sometimes click on them just for the novelty.

Then the video is not only incredibly niche, but also garbage, so I am reminded why I shouldn't do that

Considering my recs are now entirely newly posted jap golfing videoes, yes I do

There seems to be 1 or 2 reserved slots in each refresh for an extremely niche low view video. I went through a stint a few weeks ago of YT consistently recommending me the 3 to 10 view videos of this guy whose sole purpose in life was to play the swimming football mini game from final fantasy 10. For the last 10 years straight he had posted a water football match every. Single. Day.

Oh yeah and to add to this the whole auto play videos on mouse over feature where you end up playing 2 seconds of 18 different videos every time you scroll down the page? Those are added to your history and are used in the preference algorithm as if you watched them.

The that shit off if you want better suggestions and heavily abuse the "not interested" option for a few days.

I've noticed a weird change where it shows me more noob channels and less channels I'm subscribed to. Like if I've already gone through new videos from channles I watch all the time, it used to show me old videos from subscribed channels but now I'm getting new channels above the scroll. I don't mind too much as long as it's relevant. It seems to show me videos on the same topic as ones I've recently watched. Sometimes it's videos from topics I watched weeks ago.

I suppose it's difficult from YouTube's perspective because you can't really automate the search for channels that are both small and good. So they must test stuff out at random like that.

Oh cool I didn't even notice because all I look at is the Subscriptions feed. Neat! Finally they do something right!

Yeah, I've been seeing videos with double or triple digit view counts for a while now.

I think they want to promote smaller channels, but most of the things that show up are garbage honesetly.

Yeah, I was recommended like a 50 view video, it was a bit old of a guy playing a game and I actually liked it. Pretty good change since now smaller guys can actually get traction

I was hoping this would be a bit where the videos somehow relate to rdrama, but also say something about life.

But this seems like a positive change, and will give small creators a better chance to make it in the big leagues by exposing them to a wider audience. You know, you suckers that watch what youtube recommends you, instead of what your rdrama friends recommend you.

Same, but I've banished a few hundred shit channels from my sight so it might be getting desperate to find something that's to my interest

Yeah I've noticed to, but I only check my subscription tab so I don't care about their algorithms.
