Is this expected? I'm able to drive a 2nd 4K screen no problem on my MacBook Air m2. It's at the cost of some battery life though. Also my machine is fully specced out - 24g memory, 1tb hard disk.

Of course if they had to pay for it themselves, many wouldn't be willing to spend $2k extra for the image. But at zero cost, as long as the illusion works on 30% of normies, it's worth it.

Why do you need a 30x60 inch desk? All your documents and utensils can fit in a 15x20 inch area.

Sometimes I get the feeling that normies have a phobia of owning two or more computers at the same time, even when they could easily afford it. Or maybe it has never occurred to them that owning two computers is even possible.

I'm constantly encountering Linuxcels who absolutely need MS Office, or a student who needs some kind of college software that only runs in Windows, and they jump through hoops and complicate their lives by dual-booting, when $130 mini-PC's exist that run MS Office and basic programs very well.

So spend the price of a single textbook or a week's worth of soy lattes and just make your life easier. "But...owning two computers? That's not a thing!"

Apple's market segmentation at work.

I won't defend it, they shouldn't have let this stand past the M1 (at least they had an excuse of growing pains from scaling up a phone chip then), but I know my brand new iPad Pro with an M4 won't drive multiple displays even though it runs circles around most x86 laptops which is wildin.

I will say it's weird he spent $2k on the laptop and didn't watch reviews though, the base MBP is more for businesses ordering a ton of laptops, the price makes it sound like he got a custom config for that which is an odd choice.

Honestly the Apple silicon macbooks are so fricking good. I picked up a maxxed out refurb M1 Pro a few weeks ago after being a die hard Arch user for ~6 years or so and I'm really impressed.

I still want Arch or similar + a tiling wm on my desktop, but man it's so nice to have everything "just work"™. Plus, I just need to buy a docking station and it can basically replace my windows desktop for art software, relegating it to only powering my racing sim. It also helps that I finally got around to building a home server that runs all of my services, so whenever I need Linux I can just ssh in and do whatever I want to do.

If Apple ever ships a competent tiling window manager for mac os, I'll pretty much be out of reasons to use Linux on desktop.
