I worked at Google for a bit and saw this firsthand.

Quick recap on how hiring works there: the candidate goes through a series of around 5 or 6 interviews, and interviewers immediately do a short writeup of how it went, and if the short feedbacks are looking good, you write a fuller writeup. These take 30-60 min to do properly. Interview questions come from a question bank with objective criteria for how well the candidate did; in the writeups, you're not allowed to mention anything identifying the candidate's demographics (for pronouns, you're supposed to use TC for the candidate). All of them go to a hiring committee who gives the thumbs up or down depending on the feedback.

So, one day, I get this interview for a black candidate who's some kind of testing engineer for some contractor out in DC. TC gets literally no points on the interview; TC can't even write a for loop. Once it's done, I write up my short feedback and submit it.

Half an hour later, I get a message from the recruiter. He wants me to revise my scoring, and gives me a hard time about it, saying TC deserved more credit than I gave TC. This has literally never happened to me before. I refuse, and then we go to full feedback anyway. I'm like, okay, maybe TC did badly just on my interview, although I'm grumpy at having to exhaustively document how not being able to write the most basic code is a reason not to hire.

The next week, TC gets rejected by the hiring committee, and we get to see all the interviewers' feedback. And... Every single interviewer gave TC the lowest possible scores. Strong No Hire (SNH). (Except for the behavioral interview, where the questions are supposed to evaluate leadership and character and Googliness, where TC got top scores.) Usually, in situations like this TC wouldn't even get close to being reviewed by the actual hiring committee. And despite it all, TC did.

In the end, the process still reached the correct outcome, but there was obviously a very big thumb being pressed on the scale.

I've been in the same position but on top of that all the CVs get filtered by HR women before they are even sent to us, so at the very first stage where people who know anything about the work get to look at the options, we've already had 90% of the white guys thrown out and every single black or foid left in regardless of competence. Then you get a stern talking to if your selections don't include both a black person and a woman, even if the only black and female candidates completely flunked the practical test (doesn't matter, they'll get max scores in the face-to-face regardless because every hiring manager nuts their pants when they see a minority)
