Is streaming to the living room tv from the PC really this difficult?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No. I forgot about that until now :marseysad:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Plex is windows power user type shit "Im not like those filthy normies who use closed platforms like AppleTV and buy streaming services instead I pay plex a monthly fee to stream movies from my win blows PC to my Nvidia shield :marseysoyhype: " !linuxchads when you could just idk plug in a computer to your tv and watch stuff in a folder

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Nooo you don't understand I need to have a server running 24/7 and spend 2.5k on the latest hardware that's 10% faster at transcoding so I can stream movies to my homebrewed Soytendo Snitch on the couch, I can't just get a NAS and mount it as a wireless storage device on everything in my household, or use a SMB/DLNA share because... I just can't okay :marseytrollcrazy:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Wait I thought Plex was just some fancier interface for your server, people pay money for it to.. watch their own pirated movies? :marseywut2:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yes, instead of using an SMB share and just using something like Kodi or setting up Jellyfin. R-slurs actually spend hundreds of dollars to watch their OWN content that they provide. Lol, lmao even.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It's the fact that it tracks what you watch and can pick up where you left off. That's it.

I admit, whenever I wrestle with Jellyfin and its episode name detection bullshit or weebtitle frickups I ask myself why I couldn't just use a shared folder. I don't really care about shit like episode summaries or graphics or whatever. But progress-tracking is too useful to give up, and the gods of tech have declared we must suffer all this fricking complexity for such a simple thing.

>but y-you could just dump your last watch position/episode in a text file :marseyakshually:

I won't :marseychad:

The tunneling that Plex provides, I assume through their own servers. You are sending the content through their servers and you can watch it anywhere remotely. You can do that for free though if you're smart enough and use something like Jellyfin.

Using wireguard or tailscale to access your lan from anywhere is free and easy

how is that legal?

A media server? Why would it be illegal? It's just a way for you to stream stuff from your PC to a chromecast or firestick or something like that.

also what specifically does plex offer to watch?

A load of either public domain stuff or with really, really cheap distribution rights

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It's just streaming software for your own media files. You have to have done the illegal activity yourself at some point to be able to stream pirate shit on it.

I know none of you spergs have friends so FYI the main use case for PLEX is to share your media libraries with multiple friends- including non-technical ones who only understand apps. (PLEX has apps on basically every weirdo platform unlike Jellyfin and an actually usable UI).

If you only watch media on your LAN by yourself then yes, it's silly to use PLEX. If you want to run a bootleg Netflix for everyone from grandma to your bestie Billy Bob it's fantastic.

The pricing tier actually make more sense now since remote streaming is completely usable for user if the server admin has premium (which was $80 for lifetime at one point) vs. users having to do one off payments for the Android and iOS apps.

build up a service for free until its a big inconvenience to easily replicate with alternatives then pull access out from under people and paywall it to try and squeeze money from the large established userbase

The problem is you can't unfree something that was integral to the service itself, so hopefully another one will now rise to take it's place. I would uninstall and changed your PW for plex though because shit like this always ends up getting hacked because it pisses off giganerds

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

bruh we're talking about streaming video files and packaging that up with a player.

this basic functionality has been replicated an absurd number of time, including this site.

i mean the whole ecosystem is most definitely built on free software that powers all the actual functionality, they're just selling a package with a UI

Jump in the discussion.

I can believe it but you have to admit plex was by far the front runner for nonnerds to bridge the gap. The iphone dumbed down version of personal server-shit sharing shows between friends/fam.

Jump in the discussion.

this shit is as r-slurred as the medical industry still running on fax. it's literally just networked storage with a video player. in fact that's literally all the video services are. honestly that's most of the internet quite frankly.

this only reason this wheel needed to be reinvented in the first place is cause codercels can't stop reinventing the wheel to fix their latest wheel reinvention, such that navigating through the endless amount of arbitrary and extraneous wheels reinventers is nontrivial due to the sheer number of times someone thot there needs to be another reinventable wheel laying around.

i get that all the normies only read the branding, and that's always new...

but it's truly that :ma#rseyeyeroll2: from a technical perspective.

PLEX writes like 20 apps for various different services and keeps them updated.

They also host a proxy service so your friends can watch if your firewall is broken/fucked.

I thought you were a fosschad, plus you can easily do all that on your own. Jellyfin also has apps on iOS, Android, Android TV, Firestick, LG WebOS, and Roku. So Plex doesn't even have that over it.

I get that argument but consider that normies or my grandma are scared of anything that's not developed by a billion dollar corporation and doesn't blast recommended slop at them, and they don't want to watch subtitled movies or shows anyway, I'd have to search for dubbed shit and separate it into a specific folder.

It just presents local media you've already obtained, the UI will search all your friends servers.

HOWEVER you can use other cowtools to make a "requests" system which allows your friends to request media they want and then your computer will download it for them, and add it to plex - it's all very slick! This is just the front end part- https://ombi.io/

tldr; Plex is getting rid of their one time activation fee for using their mobile app and requiring users purchase a Plex Pass to access any media server running a free version of Plex Server. If you as the server owner pay for a Plex Pass, anyone accessing your server can still watch media for free (they don't need to get a Plex Pass).

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with this. They're shifting the cost burden to server owners. If you have enough money to run a Plex Server, just buy the lifetime Plex Pass. It's only a one time cost of $250.
