Phone vendors tailor their android install to fit their brand. Vanilla android by default comes with chrome, most android phones come withe Chrome. I only say most cause you said yours didn't which of course I don't actually believe.
The google app on your phone didn't actually let you visit URLs directly for the longest time because it was just a google search tool, it does so now in a very shoehorned in feel.

I actually think this would be worse for Chrome. Google doesn't need Chrome to make money, it's primary purpose is to make it less annoying for people to access the internet, which in turn generates ad revenue.
If Google sells Chrome, suddenly it needs to make a profit. That either means someone forms a foundation like Mozilla that Google pays to be the default search engine, or someone buys it and comes up with another monetization scheme that makes it even shittier.

Chrome was open source to begin with, and the default distribution just ships with integration with google services. Otherwise the open source version is 99% functionally the same. Because Google controls Chrome, it can freely integrate and use this data for its own profits, primarily in advertising but in other areas as well, while if Chrome was an independent company it would have to pay Chrome Inc. a fair price and Chrome Inc. would be free to sell this data to Google's competitors.

Firef*x has about less than 3% market share. While Google wanted their search engine to be featured on Firef*x, Mozilla was getting the bulk of that $400 million so that Google could ward off antitrust cases like this. Firef*x will probably have some kind of deal going forward, but it's probably gonna be a lot less than when Google was using them as a scarecrow for DOJ investigations.
