iran’s soccer team is hated by both the protesters and the government :marseyflagiran:

https://edition.cnn.com/2022/11/28/football/iran-soccer-family-threats-intl-spt/index.html

In the northwestern Iranian city of Zanjan, people cheered and danced, actually celebrating their team's crushing 6-2 loss to England. Iranians who watched the match in England, meanwhile, were even more outspoken, chanting, death to Khamenei. That's Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The team did try to show solidarity with the protesters when players refused to sing the Iranian national anthem before the match with England. But some protesters say it's impossible for Iran to compete in this cup without being seen as representing the regime in Tehran. Even so, Touraj says he's looking forward to the Iran team taking on the U.S..

>refuse to sing your country’s national anthem

>threatened by the revolutionary guard

>protesters still cheer when you lose

Lmao reminds me of the Chinese figure skater who left ameriKKKa to skate for the CCP but lost and was hated.

Iirc, Chinese people hated her because she got the position through nepotism and took the spot away from a lower-class mainland girl who was clearly a better skater and had worked for an Olympic position for most of her life. The crappy results were the final nail in the coffin.

state media defended her anyway so she only got bullied online.

there wasn't any proof that her selection was due to nepotism but when someone chokes that badly it's kind of sus.

I'm thinking Iranian athletes are just in it for the money until they can secretly emigrate to the west. Nobody there will hold it against them.

Problem with sub b-tier athletes. They don't have the skill set to emigrate.

Prosthetic soccer could be very entertaining. They could have specially designed limbs and switch them out like golf clubs. Remove the arms from every player that isn't the goalie too

You can't have hand-ball penalties if there aren't any hands in play, that's a big time saver

>"In the last game against Wales, the regime sent over hundreds of these actor supporters in order to create a false sense of support and favor amongst the fans. For the next game against the U.S, the regime is planning to significantly increase the number of actors into the thousands," the source said.

Now I understand where all the vuvuzelas and Iran chants came from.

Knowing Iran, I'm sure there's plenty of conspiracy theory :marseyschizowall: rumors floating around to explain why they lost. It can't possibly just be that they didn't play as well.
