"hate crime" is a stupid term as large swathes of the population (women and ethnics) are under the impression any crime they happen to be the victim of is a hate crime.
I got into this bad on /r/news back in the day over the asian brothel shootings in which there was no evidence the shooter was motivated by anything related to race, and just so happened to shoot up the brothels he was addicted to and redditors could not comprehend why the makeup of the victims being asian did not mean it was motivated by them being asian.
The most popular argument they advanced was "he's trying to get less time in jail by avoiding hate crime charges!!" as if a guy that just shot like 14 people is ever getting out of jail.
think we're ready to treat violence against women 
as a hate crime.~"people" who dont understand how hate crime laws work
