Shortly after taking the throne, Roman Emperor Gaius Tiberius (better known by his childhood nickname Caligula- 'Little Boots') fell seriously ill. He was considered a gonner but many prominent Roman citizens made demonstrative pleas to the gods that, should Caligula be spared, they would offer their own lives in exchange.

Unexpectedly, the Emperor recovered. A few months later he recalled that several people had offered their lives in return for his own. So as not to offend the gods, Caligula demanded that they An Hero by daybreak or he would have them crucified.
