Yugioh (the card game) is actually more popular than ever. 2023 had the highest tournament attendance in its 25 year history, and an American won worlds for the first time.
I didn't think I'd like a card game where I had to play on my opponent's turn as often as my own, but I play a few games of Master Duel a day and appreciate how diverse the meta is compared to games like hearthstone.
I'm not really part of the community (yet) since I've been banned on Reddit for years.
From what I've picked up though, the drama in Yugioh is so much more mild than any other card game.
The meta has now grown around “hand traps,” which are any cards you can activate from hand the way you would a Trap Card that was set on the field. This has been part of an effort to reign in “first turn kills” (FTKs), which dominated the game for a while. Winning the coin toss and playing 1st gave a massive advantage.
These hand traps aren't often even trap cards, they're just “discard this card when your opponent does something, then do X,” where X is “draw a card for every monster your opponent summons,” or “negate an opponent's action after they spend their resources to attempt it.”
Basic and easy to follow, which is obviously rare in Yugioh, which is infamous for using “if, then, or” conditions and having five different card destruction categories.
So hand traps are powerful and force games to go on longer. And some players are really salty about it since these cards can end your turn prematurely if you either don't or can't play around them.
It's not really drama though, and I'd worry it's a bit too niche.
Lmao I wonder if that's Ghostrick or Princess Cologne.
But yea getting smashed by meta bullshit kills my interest in games immediately. I had a friend that wanted me to play AO3 and I played one game with him that was over real quick and I swore off RTS after that.
What I like about hand traps in Yugioh is that you can run and get away with a jank deck these days so long as you know the meta enough to activate the hand traps at the right time.
I liked playing stuff like jank casino mage in Hearthstone, but I only ever made legend when I was running frost dk stuff.
You're underestimating just how many people have nostalgia about playground ygo. DMG is an icon in that era so it makes sense why she's so popular of a cosplay choice
It's basic foid attention-seeking on an industrial scale. I nooticed a while ago but had my suspicions confirmed when Elden Ring released and suddenly there was foids interjecting the nerdtalk with their stupid faces just staring at the camera dressed as a character from a game that had literally been out a day.
Read my musings here and be sure to leave an upmarsey or two:
E-thots know g*mer moids are easy money. This is a shitty quality pic but this was one of the most watched streams the day that Diablo 4 early released. A lot of those are probably viewbots but still, the game itself was literally 1/4 of the screen lmao.
