Sept 23rd Banned and Restricted Announcement

https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/commander-banned-and-restricted-announcement-september-23-2024

Commander:

Dockside Extortionist is banned.

Jeweled Lotus is banned.

Mana Crypt is banned.

Nadu, Winged Wisdom is banned.

Rules committee is obviously r-slurred and their reasoning doesn't make any sense (Sol Ring, Ancient Tomb, other fast mana protected, but crypt/jeweled lotus ban?). cEDH/high power players on suicide watch as the prices for these crash. Worst ban announcement since Mox Opal in Modern for sure.

Do they actually get paid to ban cards?

are they though? Most cEDH players are fine with proxies, and it's only crypt that was a surprise

It's moreso about the damaged meta with cedh players than value lost, but proxies are only recently mainstream. Every store I have frequented just started letting people play with proxies in cedh events in the past year.

Slowing down the meta like this by nerfing combo decks (Crypt/Dockside) without taking out any of the value pieces (Rhystic/Fish/Ring) will only push the meta even deeper into the 'midrange heck' we have been in since the LOTR set. Bowmasters and Ring were MASSIVE for these types of decks. They don't really care about these changes, and making dedicated turbo decks worse (ie the ones that trade interaction for speed - ex. Ob Nixilis/Prosper/RogSi) - takes away one of the only ways available to effectively play against midrange.

cEDH players aren't so much worried about the value loss as they are worried about sitting down against 3 other Tymna/Kraum players and playing the exact same cards as everyone else for a chance to make the top cut.

Stax is slightly better with these changes, although the midrange matchup getting any worse is abysmal for the archetype, and I'm sure that mana crypt and dockside are getting replaced with board or stack interaction. Creature activated ability hate (Linvala) will be more prioritized with Thrasios getting better. There will be marginally less games where your chance of stopping a player closes because you couldn't null rod before turn 1 crypt or dockside. It's really a toss up but I'm playtesting with some friends Sunday to see. Ironically enough Jeweled Lotus hits Yasharn pretty hard, although maybe not having to play against Mana Crypt will make up for it. :marseyshrug:
