Mike Mearls (creator of D&D 5e) declares his opposition to safety cowtools, and describes games without character death or similar long-term consequences as "time-wasting slop".

Because I'm at Gary Con and feeling salty - I think the idea that younger g*mers want a "safe" game - whatever that means - is utterly wrong. Participation trophies are there to make the parents feel good about themselves. The kids know it's a show.

The meaning of play comes from the sense of risk. We roleplay because it is a place where we can experience risk, loss, and defeat without enduring tangible harm. We're wired as humans to roleplay to learn how to navigate life's twists and turns.

Whether it's a dead character or failure in whatever context the session presents, the bigger the threat, the more meaning play has to us emotionally and spiritually. Removing it from the game turns it into time-wasting slop.

Bonus post:

Three attacks from an anti-paladin wielding a vorpal unholy blade. Three decapitated characters.

As you can see in the image, this is a scenario from an edition of D&D where a vorpal sword decapitated on a roll of 17-20 (actually 20-23 counting only the item's modifier but it had +3 on the attack roll).

It's fantasy. It's pretend. You can literally take your character sheet and move it to a different game. You can remake the exact same character with a different group. There is no risk. Any DM who takes risk seriously has a r*pe agreement in place with his players, where dying in the game means serious real life punishment. This is why my group roleplays.

People always love to use this argument for some reason.

He's not saying you can't. He's saying you're a cute twink if you do.

Nerds who take things too seriously are the bigger cute twinks.

R-slur. There's a difference between being invested in things and being a no fun allowed butthole over it.

That's fair but I see where's he's coming from. The main issue is you get hobby creep where r-slurs keep pushing the limits of the game to make it more "accessible" and then just water it down until it's completely limp peepee. And then you get this meme

Reported by:
  • TheDunceonMistress : 3.5e and 2e are r-slurred participation trophy nonsense, the last worthwhile edition was 1e.

He invented 5e to allow all the participation trophy kids in. Should have stuck to 3.5, or 2e to really filter the kiddos out

The admins have not intervened in the powermod issue since before the time I was Reddit CEO.

My advice (if you really want them removed) is to troll the heck out of them until they're so far on tilt that they end up violating a Reddit rule, and then the admins ban them. However, this is ultimately a destructive, negative-sum way to live.

My better advice is to just go plant some trees. You'll feel good.
