I think valve has done a decent job with deadlock.

I watched the gameplay videos and I don't really get it but from what I understand the game was made by some guy who is really famous for making MOBA games and people are saying that all the characters in the game are overpowered so everybody is on equal footing in that way but also fun. The 3 v 3 system in game makes sense as this generation has less people going out and doing things now. Looking at people getting excited for Deadlock makes me feel like an old man looking at the kids being weird but as long as they are having a good time who am I to complain.

The thing I like about Valve is that they are releasing games that test and try out new things even now and even if their games do not get the player count that goes up high enough, you can still study the game to figure out what works and what does not work.

While Deadlock does not appear to be anything as exciting as Half Life Alyx, it does feel like it would have more staying power due to being a MOBA equivalent and having a high player count already in Beta numbering about 40,000 even now and having a peak above 100,000.

Currently the game looks like it won't be able to surpass DOTA or League of Legends but who knows, maybe once it is out of beta it will have far more popularity, although my gut says that it will remain in the under 100,000 range but have a firm fan following that will not give up on it.

Long term, Valve needed a new online game and Deadlock seems to be a well enough fit to see the job through for the next decade.

If Deadlock succeeds, it would expand the Valve universe to half life, portal, team fortress, counter strike, and now deadlock. Which is a pretty good lineage to fall back on in case of an emergency.

This game is almost certainly going to be a success. If it becomes a hit we might see Valve go into a deep slumber for another 3-5 years. Which isn't really a bad thing considering that valve prefers to release games for a new generation over time.

What do you guys think the next Valve game is going to be?

Literally the moment I saw everyone lewding the goblin without the game even being out yet, I thought "Yep. This game's gonna make it."

Why even bother hiring playtesters or whatever at this point, just show off your thing to a bunch of coomers and see what they do with it.

deadlock seems ok i guess but i feel like it will struggle to hold on to players once the meta settles in.

Imagine how sweaty mobatards are, and then imagine how annoying hero based shooter players are. If this game creates a core audience out of those 2 groups it will be ridiculously taaahxic, and normies arent gonna wanna play a pew pew game where you need a comprehensive understanding of different mathcups and item progressions and general moba strategy shit.

not what i would be doing if i was valve but hey i didnt like tf2 till heavy started showing up on youtube saying funny shit, so what do i know.

@Fresh_Start think the game will count as a success even if after release it can only hold on too 40,000 players per day for the next 10 years.

VR gaming needs a bundle where everything comes with it (including dedicated console) and it "just works" for <$1000. Meta Quest is kinda doing that but it's all weird mobile sorta shit. Valve knew they couldn't do it with Half Life Alyx, that's why it wasn't Half Life 3. When they can do it, that's when we'll get Half Life 3 and VR gaming will begin in earnest

Valve could maybe try too sell the valve steam deck 2 and the valve index 2 as a combined package? Would that work?

If they could get the price and performance there it would be :marseykey:ed but good VR probably requires full sized, high powered GPU.

Yeah, honestly @Fresh_Start figure they could actually pull it off by the third gen but not before. So after the 2030s. Another problem that persists is that the VR market is too split up for it too grow properly. Meta, and PSVR2 make things harder by making VR games that are exclusive too their niche hardware. Only valve seems too be solving for this problem by making valve VR games non-exclusive allowing them too be played on any compatible headset.

In the long run @Fresh_Start think Valve will win the VR market because the others are treating it as a gimmick with gimmick games that are exclusive too their gimmick headset, meanwhile Valve VR is the only one that treats it as another way of playing games. @Fresh_Start think Sony VR2 will get ahead due too coming combined with PS5 but Valve should ideally remain the second contender.

Thanks for reminding @Fresh_Start of Left 4 Dead. Almost forgot about that one.

Also you should probably make another valve post about how the valve steam deck and the valve index exists.
