It's gonna be bad Half-life 3 can never live up to the expectations people have for it. Both 1 and 2 had a massive impact on gaming as a whole, and people will probably expect the same for 3, but I doubt it can do that.
Mine are cautiously optimistic after an entire teenage life of being fricked about and Marc Llaidlaw informing the world of its OVER status.
Tyler and co have been saying some really interesting things about destructable environments, planet gravity and randomized battlefields.
I don't think that it's going to set the world on fire but then again, Half-Life 2 wasn't actually that revolutionary. It just combined a lot of cool shit into a really good mixture with the secret sauce of an incredibly detailed lore naturally sprinkled all over the place.
It cannot live up to the expectations, but it won't necessarily be bad. I wouldn't be optimistic, but Valve is not your typical gaming developer, so you never know.
Anyway, is there actually any proof that HL3 is coming (ever), or it's just the meme again?
Valve are doing a massive hiring spree for an as-of-yet unnanounced title. Half-Life 2's anniversary is soon and there's been rumours of an Alyx successor for years. It's not that hard to figure out

With current technology is there even anywhere new to go? It seems like the industry has been stagnant for years and not (just) due to a lack of creativity. What could it being to the table that hasn't been done already?

Depends on your expectations.

Agree. Thus I would not make a HL3 if I were Valve.
Do stuff like Alyx or other small things, but don't touch the name HL.

That's the main problem I think. They probably tried with Alyx, finally making VR viable for video games, but it didn't really do anything.
