I have yet to see any convincing data that shows that being what the industry would call "advertiser friendly" is actually profitable. I'll give an example: youtube. At first they introduce demonetizing(removing ads from videos) as a way to try to force youtubers that already built their entire industry by being "not advertiser friendly" to be "advertiser friendly". Immediately you could see youtube quality taking a nosedive and youtube has struggled ever since to the point where now ads show up on demonetized videos but instead of giving the video a cut of the pay they take 100% of the pay. Think about it... They demonetized channels but then put on the ads back but the demonetization status stayed. So clearly they are not concerned about ads being "associated with certain types of behaviors" but rather about controlling users.
Businesses talk about maintaining safety speech' yet aren't willing to cut their nose to spite their face??? Oh my goodness!

Our society has a huge mismatch between what the ruling class thinks is popular and what actually is popular
Every society has for a long time. The hoi polloi smeared their graffiti anywhere they could during the Roman days.
It's garbage, right? Then again we've got Hotep nonsense in the latest Cleopatra documentary. So maybe it's more complicated than "the elite" vs. "everyone else." Derp.

Not really, it's pretty simple. It only gets "complicated" when the gulf between elite opinions and plebian opinions gets too large, as it is now.
