how long does it take to transfer like 400gb of roms from the steamdeck internal storage to a microsd
i was gonna make a thread all gushing like gee whiz that was easy, you literally just press Y to format the card and then click Migrate and even a luddite r-slur like me was able to figure this out, another massive dub for deckchads
but then i clicked Migrate about 20 minutes ago and

The Steam Deck only supports UHS-I cards, which have a write speed of about 30 MB/s, so it should take around 4 hours.

Actually it might be considerably more than 4 hours if there's a lot of small files.

What's a better way to expand memory
I know literally nothing about hardware
But a little thing you can just stick in a hole to increase memory many times over seems solid to me

Don't let the nerds bully you into some convoluted hardware mod. For retro games, you don't need blistering read write speeds. SD card is fine.

Swap the drive out if you got the poorcel version
That might be beyond you tho so I wouldn't do it unless you know how to use a screwdriver

512 ssd I think
The drive is fine I just wanted more space for even more old gaymes :(

You can get more space with a different drive. Up to 8tb I think?

The problem is it's a 2230 length (not full size 2280. and those cap out at 2TB right now. Plus the one it comes with only has chips on one side of it, idk if that's a limitation but depending on how tightly it's squeezed in there a two-sided drive might not fit.
He could still double it to 1TB at minimum though

only for stuff like photos or music, no way you'll be able to play games off it that are big enough that moving them off the device makes sense
And they're so unreliable that as backup they don't make sense either since they die so fast
_____
Steam deck has an iFixit score of 7/10, so if you want more storage, check out their guide.

roms get heavy quick for home consoles, but faster speeds aren't really needed since they ran on CDs/shit cartridges which have abysmal read speed

You should pick up one of these btw, just got mine and tested out, works great for charging while playing so you don't have the cord awkwardly poking out the top, doesn't quite solve the lack of room to charge it while in the case but still quite handy

I've now got the thing propped against a wall with the case holding the right joystick pushed so it won't go to sleep
Hopefully it's finished before I go to bed tonight because my dumb butt set this up on the bedroom floor and it was a huge pain and I don't want to have to rejigger it in another room

Oh.
yeah i guess in the future just keep backups on the computer.
then do transferring there.
then you can just delete shit off the deck instead of having to move it.
Like the port on the steamdeck is prob just slow. That's why its not going the speed the thing is rated.
Like how some usb ports are usb2 or usb 3 or thunderbolt
