Humans are usually the "jack-of-all-trades" kinda race. They are magical, but not as good as elves. They are warriors, but not as good as orcs. They are crafty and ingenious, but not as good as dwarves. They usually also have a thing for "diplomacy" and more often at least get along with other races.

Yeah, this comes up in both sci-fi and fantasy. Humans are usually known for their grit/perseverance, or their creativity if not intelligence, or something like that. I remember in Mass Effect there was some theme of Mass Effect having more "genetic diversity" and that being useful for their growth, although it mostly just seems like an excuse for why you don't have to have a bunch of subraces for each alien race.

Humans tend to not have any downsides. Orcs are usually dumb or incapable of using magic, elves die to a strong gust of wind, and dwarves don't give a frick about surface cute twinks, they just wanna dig and drink.

The majority of fantasy settings are just dumb "Tolkien but this is slightly different" often set somewhere that's Europe but totally not bro. The authors are usually hacks that get one hit and then try to stretch it out for 10+ books for some reason.
It's a shit genre even by genre fiction standards and I'm tired of pretending that it's not.
