"walk past Fort Dildo, skip the first intersection, walk 3 miles into the Ashlands, turn left when you see a dead bush, follow one of the cracks in the ground to a cave in a hill and collect dues from a summoner who will try to kill you"
Nah I'm good on the 45 minute exposition dumps by some neurodivergent who tries to flex his military knowledge but then shows a cutscene with M16 bullets tumbling. He does explore some interesting themes though so I give him credit for that.
Yeah Metal Gear Solid has great writing... so great that I'm literally mashing every button trying to jump off this jeep rather than have to listen to any more of this burn victim in the Zorro mask talking.

It's weird when people say this, like how is uncharted's writing better than gears? Is it just people " literally me"ing with the swarmy main character?
Maybe. But the dialogue is fricking hilarious and comes across as authentic. I haven't played gears since I was 15, but I don't remember it being story focused.
Yes because I won't play a nonhomonid (Khajiit Argonian Redguard) and in all of the other ES games the rest of the races were worthless compared to the High Elves, but they cucked the High Elf Magicka bonus in Skyrim so now they're worthless.
Why was he level 1 with no skills or abilities and knowing nothing about the world?
Skyrim makes it hard to roleplay someone who actually existed before waking up on the cart. Future games should give you backstory options even if they don't bring classes back
Yeah that was a really cool feature. The only issue I had with it was Cerberus being responsible for the thresher maw attack from one backstory. That should have had a pretty big effect in how that Shepard approaches them in 2.
Imo Cerberus either should have been a different organization in ME2 so you start with a fresh impression of them, or else TIM should have opened by dismissing the ME1 scientists as a rogue cell (and then players slowly realize they were par for the course). Instead the issue is mostly swept under the rug
ES games are centered on being a prisoner and a total nobody, with Daggerfall being the only exception, but you're shipwrecked in a dungeon at the beginning so it's still consistent enough.
The traditional class system gave you a bit of say in who you were before. I'd also say that "petty criminal wrapped up in great events" is still enough of a lead to give yourself some roleplay ideas. Skyrim doesn't even establish that you did anything wrong, just that you were trying to cross the border (no khajit is illegal, chud). In theory that adds more possible backgrounds, but you can't really express them in the game.
Even the ability to start with a few levels in smithing and get alternate dialogue from the Riverwood smith would go a ways in making you feel real

I genuinely loved how Shepard from Mass Effect has a backstory that gets mentioned and even effects a few quests.
