I kind of agree tbh. Skyrim has 1 really good element. It is the only open world game I've played where I actually felt like there was interesting stuff everywhere. But the game is built around combat and the combat is garbage.

Jump in the discussion.

So were Arena Daggerfall Morrowind and Oblivion. Sure you go on quests to collect someone's lunch money, but it's combat the whole way

Jump in the discussion.

The broken combat in Morrowind was fun when you exploited it.

I played a crackhead mage once I figured out alchemy exploits. Levitation and Open spells essentially break the game as well

Every fricking dungeon is copy paste bullshit and that got old quick. Bethesda have always been lazy fricks. That's why Starfield is a procedurally generated slopfest. They're lazy fricks.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Don't ever boot up Oblivion if you think that Skyrim's dungeons are copy paste. Daggerfall was the original procedural project so it is more or less tradition at this point.

Rather than laziness I would accuse them of stubbornness. They still chase the idea that their worlds should be massive and with tons of locations spread throughout, while housing hundreds of characters and items at the same time. This clashes with the idea of each dungeon being a truly unique experience, so either instead of a lot of dungeons there are only a dozen or two and they are intricately designed or the developers create a few tilesets that can be reused plenty of times and, with enough creativity, can still make memorable locations.

It is an ancient debate of quality over quantity, but if you ever play Arena, you will realise that Bethesda chose quantity as their priority a long time ago.

It's literally all about the quests and stories. The combat is just filler and really isn't the point of the game.

I think oblivion was a bit better in that respect. Like the quest where some schizo thinks he's being followed and hires you to find out who's doing it. You can follow him around if you want but there's no stalkers. Then you can tell him the truth, or you can frame someone. I think you could even get him to try killing the mayor or whatever (the guards basically smash him up). Just fun stuff like that.

But yeah the combat in all of those games isn't the main point at all.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Nah, the main focus of all Bethesda games is exploration and they excel at that. Everything else comes second.

Yes because I won't play a nonhomonid (Khajiit Argonian Redguard) and in all of the other ES games the rest of the races were worthless compared to the High Elves, but they cucked the High Elf Magicka bonus in Skyrim so now they're worthless.

I play a Nord for the in-game white privilege.

Skyrim makes it hard to roleplay someone who actually existed before waking up on the cart. Future games should give you backstory options even if they don't bring classes back

Jump in the discussion.

I genuinely loved how Shepard from Mass Effect has a backstory that gets mentioned and even effects a few quests.

I know Elder Scrolls is a different kind of rpg but I think it's still a good idea :marseyshrug:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yeah that was a really cool feature. The only issue I had with it was Cerberus being responsible for the thresher maw attack from one backstory. That should have had a pretty big effect in how that Shepard approaches them in 2.

Imo Cerberus either should have been a different organization in ME2 so you start with a fresh impression of them, or else TIM should have opened by dismissing the ME1 scientists as a rogue cell (and then players slowly realize they were par for the course). Instead the issue is mostly swept under the rug

The consistent start of every single ES game is you are a nobody and start in prison. It would be odd to change that.

Jump in the discussion.

Meh, selective amnesia. It was explicit in New Vegas, let's say it's implied you got brain damage from getting knocked the frick out before the cart.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

ES games are centered on being a prisoner and a total nobody, with Daggerfall being the only exception, but you're shipwrecked in a dungeon at the beginning so it's still consistent enough.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The traditional class system gave you a bit of say in who you were before. I'd also say that "petty criminal wrapped up in great events" is still enough of a lead to give yourself some roleplay ideas. Skyrim doesn't even establish that you did anything wrong, just that you were trying to cross the border (no khajit is illegal, chud). In theory that adds more possible backgrounds, but you can't really express them in the game.

Even the ability to start with a few levels in smithing and get alternate dialogue from the Riverwood smith would go a ways in making you feel real
