As dumb as this company's existence is, it's the lazy vidjagames companies outsourcing their writing that baffles me. If this is the level of confidence you have in your own staff writing, maybe you in fact deserve to have your game ruined.

Starfield had half their credits be in hindi from outsourcing their dev work. These companies are riding the hype of their brands from 20 years ago at this stage. :marseynukegoggles:

I don't understand this. Between this and the Screenwriters Guild Strike, I'm surprised that there is a class of people that people think of as "the writers", if that makes sense. I feel like I could do that shit. Put me in coach.

Non writers like you really don't get it.

If you were in charge of writing I bet you would just have every character start start swearing carelessly, in an attempt to create "realistic" dialogues.

Us real writers instead, spend weeks trying to figure out the best place in the script where to put that N-word which turns a play into a real masterpiece

I think that the easiest answer to this is probably just that the indian outsourcing problem exists in the game industry too, and since indians can't actually read or write in english at a middle school level, well... suddenly Sweet Baby Inc becomes a whole lot more attractive than letting an H1B work at it. It's the same reason why whitelist and blacklist were changed, it wasn't to be woke, it was because indians don't have the background knowledge to infer the meaning of each. (Source? Everyone who thinks 'allowlist' is a more descriptive term on stackoverflow or Hackernews strangely seems to originate from the subcontinent of India...)

It's not even a matter of them being cheap. The issue is that westerners have an inherent bias in favor of their fellow westerners. They see their own kind and assume they must be good at their job. In reality, this is very often not the case.

I'm pretty sure the people deciding whether or not to involve the Baby aren't the people dragging and dropping shit onto an open unity engine window. Since usually it's larger companies involving them, or rambunctious indies riding the high from a previous success, restructuring and later choosing to contract out their writing to the Baby of Doom.

I don't honestly know how it is now, but a few years ago there were a shitload of indians trying to come over on H1B visas to work as game devs. I am actually fairly certain that one of the big game companies actively took a few under their wing to try to get more through (not sure which one). I imagine that that has had a pretty big effect on the industry.

It's still happening, maybe less in Amerikkka, but the Swarms of Punjab still have a few backup locations to spread their poison among the West...

I don't know how things are in the US, but in Canada a foreign worker must be given the opportunity to apply for a position before it is offered to a Canadian. It may be the same where you are at, but I suspect that western game dev companies are simply not competent enough to actually find good candidates.

I think it's actually a problem with the whole CS/programming career path in general. Degrees matter less in it because academiacel programmers're usually taught fundamentals and the actual 'whys' behind programming. However, a lot of the modern tech stack (game engines) are basically centred around making mediocre developers able to shit out more 'content' with it more or less working provided they plug in all the assets like 3d models, sounds etc into the right spots. This makes sense due to the fact that games're more of a short term thing where it makes sense to hire a bunch of indians for a while, fire them once the game releases while keeping the actual competent people on patch duty since they're more likely to actually figure out how to patch bugs.

This probably explains why AAA tend to be as buggy as they are, too. I think it's more or less due to a lack of trying than incompetence in the hiring project. Like, sure, someone might've read SICP, the Art of Computer Programming, or whatever. But that's mainly theory. What you want as a CEO is someone who can do the needful and get the needed done, fast, so you just hire 20 indians and call it a day.

Canada a foreign worker must be given the opportunity to apply for a position before it is offered to a Canadian.

Also this is fricked considering the population of india in comparison to like, most western countries on their own.

Yes I understand. In Canada, the issue with this is that we have a shitload of people who got degrees during the resource boom in the 2010s, who are now being "forced" (by their own incompetence) to work in tech because there aren't any jobs anymore in "their field". This is actually one of the reasons I know about this whole thing, we've been overrun with them and now they complain that we "aren't giving them a fair chance" and try to unionize even though they make like one quarter of what experienced workers do.

Frankly Canadian companies shouldn't be offering positions to Canadians period. It's a reactionary policy

Yeah, there is some logic to that. I don't think that policy has ever been applied to a specific position, but there was a case of a big company that had to pay a ton of money in damages for discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation (I think).

Yes, the worst thing about Sweet Baby is that it's a symptom of the real problems, not a cause.
