From an artistic standpoint I'd agree with that statement, most modern novels and films simply try to ape acclaimed films and novels of the past and that warps their quality immensely, video games have this problem to a lesser degree due to being a newer medium, so yeah I'd say video game stories are in the upper of stories in a world where Infinite Jest is considered a good book.
