The vision they had was actually really cool. Interstellar space colonies basically, with resource management, etc. Also apparently completely unrealistic because early access had none of that and what they did release was worse than KSP1.

KSP was grounded enough that something like a space colony was unrealistic. You spend most of the game building plausible probes, landers, and space stations. You can land "buildings” on other planets but it's kinda pointless to make a "colony".
When they started talking about colonies I was afraid they were trying to do too much.
